1. Keep your scalp fresh
Use a gentle scalp-cleaning method while your braids are in—rather than waiting until the braids are removed.
🧼 How to keep your braids clean
1a. Clean your scalp once a week
Mix a little shampoo with water in a spray bottle.
Apply it directly to the scalp and between the braids, not heavily over the entire braid.
Gently massage your scalp with your fingertips.
Wipe/rinse with a damp cloth or gently rinse with water.
b. Dry it properly This is very important. Don't leave your scalp damp under the braids.
Use a clean towel to gently press out excess water.
Allow your hair to dry completely.
If you have a hair dryer, use cool or low heat.
c. Don't pile products onto the scalp Heavy oils, creams and edge-control can mix with sweat and dirt and cause buildup. If your scalp needs moisture, use only a small amount of lightweight oil.
d. Keep the braids themselves fresh You can lightly wipe the length of the braids with a damp clean cloth if they become dusty or sweaty. Don't repeatedly soak them.
e. Protect them at night Use a clean satin/silk bonnet or scarf. Also change your pillowcase regularly.
f. After sweating If you've been exercising or sweating heavily, let your scalp dry properly. You can gently wipe the scalp with a clean damp cloth rather than allowing sweat to remain there for days.

2. Keep your scalp moisturised
If your scalp becomes dry, use a suitable lightweight oil/moisturiser without overloading it with products.
3. Don't keep braids in too long
Give your hair and scalp a break after taking the braids down, and clean and care for your hair before installing another style.

👉 For a one-month braid style: I'd suggest a gentle scalp clean about once a week, or more often if you're sweating a lot. You don't need to wash the entire braided hair every few days.
And remember: itching, strong odor, soreness, bumps, or excessive flakes are signs that the style may need attention rather than simply adding more oil.
