My hair was breaking constantly when I combed it, braided it, even when I washed it. It was unbearable! 😩
I tried oils, masks… nothing worked.
Then I remembered something so simple: okra. Yes, that same okra we use to make soup! 🥣
I made a quick okra gel with water and applied it to my hair. And just like that… the breakage started stopping!
Who knew the easiest solution was right in my kitchen all along?
If your hair is breaking, try okra gel you will thank me later!

Why Okra Gel Is My Favorite Pre-Poo Treatment (And The Science Behind It) 🌿
Over time, I’ve realized that not all DIY gels behave the same on the hair.
Okra gel remains my favorite pre-poo treatment — and here’s why:
1. High Mucilage Content
Okra contains a natural substance called mucilage (that slippery, stretchy texture).
Mucilage is rich in polysaccharides that:
• Attract moisture
• Coat the hair shaft
• Reduce friction during detangling
• Help minimize breakage
That coating effect is what gives my hair that instant softness.
2. Better Moisture Retention
When I mix okra gel with oil before applying it, it works in two steps:
• The okra hydrates the hair
• The oil slows down moisture loss
This combination helps my hair stay moisturized longer even after washing.
3. Conditioning Effect
Okra gel behaves almost like a light natural conditioner.
It softens, improves manageability, and prepares the hair for shampooing without leaving it stripped.
I’ve tried flaxseed gel as well. While it’s great for curl definition and light hold, it doesn’t give me the same cushioning and moisture retention as okra when used as a pre-poo.
This is why I always say:
Not every popular DIY will work the same for everyone. Once you understand what your hair responds to, stick with it.
For my hair?
Okra gel wins every time 🌿
Now tell me —
Have you tried okra gel before, or are you team flaxseed? And if you’ve tried both, which one does your hair prefer? 👀👇🏾
