DID YOU KNOW?
Your scalp does more than hold your hair. It’s a protective, multi-layered structure that covers your skull. Doctors remember the 5 layers with the word SCALP — each letter stands for one layer, from the outside in.
S – Skin
This is the layer you can see and touch. It’s thick, flexible skin that contains hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous oil glands.
Why it matters: The oil keeps hair and skin from drying out. The dense blood supply makes scalp wounds heal quickly, but it also means cuts bleed a lot.
C – Connective Tissue
Under the skin is a dense layer of fibrous connective tissue. It acts like strong glue.
Why it matters: This layer holds blood vessels, nerves, and lymph vessels in place. Because the vessels are fixed in place, they can’t collapse when cut — that’s why scalp bleeding can be heavy.
A – Aponeurosis (Galea Aponeurotica)
This is a tough, sheet-like tendon that connects the forehead muscle to the back-of-head muscle.
Why it matters: It allows you to move your scalp forward and backward. It also acts like a structural “helmet” that gives strength to the scalp.
L – Loose Connective Tissue
A soft, spongy layer sitting under the aponeurosis.
Why it matters: This layer lets the top 3 layers slide over the skull. It’s also a space where blood or infection can spread easily, so doctors call it the “danger zone” of the scalp.
P – Pericranium
The deepest layer. It’s the periosteum, or membrane, that covers the skull bone itself.
Why it matters: It supplies nutrients to the bone and anchors the scalp to the skull. If infection reaches this layer, it can affect the bone.
