A 42-year-old flight instructor in Argentina removed his seatbelt and jumped from a small plane during a training flight, leaving his 22-year-old student to land the aircraft by herself. According to the student, Leandro Bertazzo took off his headphones, gathered his belongings, opened the door, and said, “You know what to do, keep moving forward,” before jumping. The student, who had a pilot’s license but very limited flying experience, immediately called for help and safely landed the Cessna C-150 on her own. The flight school’s director praised her professionalism, saying she made a perfect landing despite the shock. Bertazzo was later found dead in a field after a 20-minute search. He had been receiving neuropsychiatric treatment known only to close relatives and had completed another training flight with a different student earlier that day. Police in Toledo, Argentina, say the circumstances are highly unusual and the investigation is still ongoing.

A jury awarded a $75 million medical malpractice verdict after 32-year-old Jonathan Buckelew of Georgia collapsed during a chiropractic neck treatment in 2015 and suffered a brain stem stroke that went undiagnosed until the following day. His attorney said miscommunication between an ER physician and a radiologist delayed treatment long enough to cause catastrophic brain damage. Buckelew was left with locked-in syndrome, a rare condition that leaves a person fully paralyzed except for eye movement. The jury found the ER doctor 60% at fault and the radiologist 40% at fault, concluding that critical warning signs were not properly communicated or acted on. Buckelew now requires around-the-clock care for the rest of his life, and legal experts say the severity of his condition was likely a major factor in the size of the verdict.
