MOMENTUM: Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics Findings Dissemination Meeting.
The Sokoto State Ministry of Health in Collaboration with USAID Nigeria has organized a one day findings dissemination meeting with regard to fistula program in the state.
Momentum: A new USAID program on Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics has been launched on the 28th of June 2021. The program targets increased advocacy and awareness against early child marriage and the possible setbacks from a lack of family planning on women’s health in particular: Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF).
The program focal states are Kebbi, Sokoto and Bauchi states.
The today's Meeting aims at:
- Sharing the key findings from Momentum Safe surgery in family planning and obstetrics (MSSFPO) Rapid baseline assessment conducted.
- To review and identify priority intervention across Safe surgery in family planning and obstetrics (MSSFPO) technical areas.
- To generate consensus on key priorities for MSSFPO implementation in focus state.
The meeting was attended by the State Commissioner of Health Dr Muhammad Ali Inname, Executive Director Hospital Service Management board Malam Buhari Shehu some directors from the SMOH, SSPHCDA, Sarkin Yakin Gagi among other members of the state fistula eradication committee.
There were presentation from the consultant lead Halima Abdullahi supported by the State Fistula program officer Zainab Yabo on Overview of MSSPO consortium members, technical areas, geographic scope, safe surgical obstetric care, FGM/C prevention and management in obstetric care, obstetric and iatrogenic fistula prevention, treatment and reintegration.
There was also a group work during the meeting with focus on the findings recommendations on surgical obstetric care, FGM/C and Fistula.
The meeting was held at State Emergency operation centre EOC Sokoto.

Sokoto state ministry of health in collaboration with IHP organise 3day 2021 Obstetric Fistula Annual Operational Plan (AOP) from: 21th-23rd Dec, 2020 with all the relevant stake holders (Ministry for local government, House committee on health, Ministry of religious affairs, Ministry of budget and economic planning, Ministry of women & children affairs, Maryam abacha women & children hospital, General hospital goronyo, Hospital Service management board, Ministry of information, SOSMEA, SSPHCDA, Mariya Tambuwal development initiative, UNICEF, WHO, Fistula Foundation, IHP, Extended hands foundation, Spotlight Initiative, UNFPA, Sultanate council committee On health etc)
The aim of this meeting is to collaborate with all the relevant state stake holders and partners supporting Obstetric Fistula to harmonise all obstetric fistula activities in the state and to guide the state during implementation and have proper coordination and monitoring.

Her Excellency, the Minister for Women Affairs today visited Maryam Abacha VVF Centre Sokoto to supervised the ongoing VVF Repairs in the State and also distributed wrappers to the VVF patients. In attendance is Hon. Balarabe Kakale Shuni, Hon. Commissioner for women affairs and many others. The State Coordinator Welcome them with the CMD Maryam Abacha, CMAC, Fistula Surgeons and other Supporting Staff.
