Farmers have been producing Tuscan orris in the hills of Chianti and Pratomagno, Tuscany, for centuries. Obtained from the rhizomes of iris flowers, this waxy substance and its powdery, violet-like scent are the result of a five-year process of cultivation and extraction that, to this day, is completed almost entirely by hand.

In ancient Rome, opoponax was imported from the Horn of Africa and burned as incense in rituals. Perfumers also used this precious resin in the rich, balsamic ointments and scented oils they created for Roman elites.
