A calm, relaxed nervous system is what we want for every baby đ¤
when a baby is constantly distressed, unsettled, or difficult to soothe, itâs easy to put it down to personality or just âthat phase.â but a lot of the time there is a neurological issue underlying that distress that hasnât been identified yet.
the nervous system controls everything. how a baby feeds, sleeps, digests, and regulates their emotions all runs through it. when itâs under stress, the whole body feels it and the baby has no way to tell you except through crying, tension, and unsettledness.
thatâs why we look at the whole picture, not just the symptom on the surface.

Low muscle tone in babies is more common than most parents realise, and itâs often misunderstood đś
muscle tone refers to the resting tension in a muscle, basically how ready it is to engage when needed. when tone is low, the muscles arenât switched off, theyâre just not activating efficiently. for babies this often shows up as a head that flops more than expected, difficulty holding positions, or slower progress with movement milestones.
the instinct as a parent is to help. to support the head, to hold the position for them. but this is actually one of the most important things to understand: if youâre always supporting the babyâs head, the muscles never get the signal that they need to do that work themselves. the nervous system learns through load and effort, not through having the effort removed.
what we want to see is the baby beginning to actively move their head toward the centre. that engagement, even small and effortful, is what starts to build the neural pathways that strengthen tone over time.
results wonât be immediate and thatâs completely normal. the body is laying down new patterns. consistency, the right exercises at home, and reducing the amount of passive support are all part of how this changes.
less help from the outside creates more strength from the inside.

Why do women carry so much tension in their neck? đ
itâs not a coincidence. women are more likely to internalise stress and the neck is one of the first places that shows up physically. the muscles at the base of the skull and along the cervical spine are deeply connected to the nervous systemâs stress response. when cortisol rises, those muscles contract and they donât always know how to let go.
for this patient, the trigger is her desk. the moment she sits down she can feel it starting to build, before sheâs even done anything stressful. her body has essentially been conditioned to associate that environment with tension.
whatâs significant in her case is that the tension used to travel down her arm as well. nerve referral from the neck into the arm is a sign of real compression and irritation in the cervical spine. through consistent rehab and targeted scapular exercises that pattern has stopped, which means the underlying issue is actually shifting, not just being managed.
thatâs what real progress looks like.

Babies donât wake at night for no reason, and sleep isnât just rest for them đ
during deep sleep, the body releases growth hormone, the hormone responsible for physical development, tissue repair, and building the nervous system. this is where the saying âgrowing in your sleepâ actually comes from. itâs not just a saying. it is literally happening.
growing pains are real too. as bones lengthen and muscles stretch to keep up, that process can cause genuine discomfort, especially in the legs. babies and young children feel this even if they canât tell you whatâs wrong. that restlessness and discomfort overnight often has a physical root.
one of the simplest things you can do is make leg massage part of your bedtime routine. gentle strokes down the legs before sleep help increase circulation, ease muscle tension, and signal to the nervous system that itâs time to wind down. when the body feels safe and relaxed it sleeps deeper and longer.
try it tonight and make it a habit đ¤

One week ago this baby couldnât lift his head at all during tummy time. đ¤
Not for lack of trying, his head would just drop straight down. The strength and tone simply werenât there yet.
This week things are shifting. Neck tone is developing. The pelvis has started to relax and engage the way it should. Small changes, but they matter enormously because every milestone in a babyâs development is built on the one before it.
Rolling over is the next step and itâs coming, but herâs something most people donât know about how that happens: the head has to turn first. The body follows the head. Always. Thatâs how the neurological sequence is designed.
As babyâs body Strats to connect the pieces, the rest will follow.

Bed rotting. you know it. youâve probably done it đď¸
for those who havenât heard the term, bed rotting is basically spending extended time lying in bed doing nothing, scrolling, watching, existing. it took off as a self care concept but the reality is a bit more complicated than that.
when your body has been in stress mode for a long time, your vagus nerve tone changes. the vagus nerve is the main highway between your brain and your body, regulating your heart rate, digestion, mood, and how you respond to the world. when it becomes dysregulated from chronic stress, you can start to feel more irritated, more fatigued, and harder to calm down even when youâre âresting.â
lying in bed isnât actually the reset it feels like. but bed rotting with better posture? thatâs at least a start đ
this patient came in feeling weighed down and left feeling lighter after just one session. sometimes the body just needs someone to help it remember what relaxed actually feels like.

Babies canât tell us when theyâre uncomfortable, but their bodies absolutely can đ¤
tension in the sacrum and lower digestive area is more common in newborns than most people realise and it can show up as straining, difficulty passing wind, and a very unsettled baby.
a gentle sacral release helps free up that tension and support the body in doing what it naturally should. sometimes the response is almost instant.
if your baby is struggling, it doesnât always have to stay that way.
