Today, on World Cancer Day, we pause to honour everyone impacted by cancer.

We remember those we’ve lost, stand alongside those living with cancer, and hold close the families, friends, and communities who walk this journey every day.

We also acknowledge the health professionals, researchers, volunteers, and advocates whose care, commitment and compassion make such a difference.

At Sweet Louise, we know that cancer is more than a diagnosis — it’s a unique journey, different for each individual. One that calls on extraordinary strength, softness, resilience, courage, and hope.

As it is Daffodil day today for awareness for anyone who is or has gone through cancer. I thought I would share this little bit of information below..

As I got asked yesterday at work.. by a customer if I knew where in Christchurch the Cancer Society was.. (Back story.. she had cancer previously and just moved down from the north island. So she thought she would see if they needed any more helpers for today. )

There isn't a single statistic for the exact number of people in New Zealand who develop alopecia after cancer because it depends on the
type of cancer, the specific treatment received, and the individual. However, a general estimate is that chemotherapy-induced hair loss has an incidence of around 65%. Hair loss from radiotherapy is limited to the treated area, while hair growth after treatment is the norm, though permanent hair loss can occur with certain high-dose drugs or radiation.
Factors influencing alopecia:

Type of treatment:
Chemotherapy: Some chemotherapy drugs are more likely to cause hair loss than others because they target rapidly dividing cells, including hair follicles.
Radiotherapy: Hair loss is usually limited to the area of the body receiving radiation.
Other treatments: Some hormonal therapies, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies can also lead to hair loss.

Drug combinations: Specific combinations of chemotherapy drugs, such as those including taxanes and anthracyclines, increase the risk of permanent hair loss.
Individual factors: The dose and scheduling of treatment can affect how much hair is lost.

What to expect:

Temporary vs. Permanent: In most cases, hair grows back after treatment ends.

Timing: Hair loss often starts a few weeks after treatment begins.
Regrowth: Hair may initially regrow as fine fuzz and can return with a different texture or color.
Long-term loss: About 1 in 3 breast cancer survivors experience long-term or permanent hair loss, and a similar rate is seen in childhood cancer survivors.
