It’s deep, warm and utterly divine. Resinous and slightly smoky, softened by the beautiful warmth of cedarwood and rosewood, with just enough earthy depth from patchouli.

Its natural perfume to me.

So… how did I come across goats milk soap?
A few months into my move to Dunedin, my skin changed.
What started as a few patches turned into full-body eczema. It was agony!

Red, blistering, scaly and so incredibly itchy that there were times I wanted to chop my own body parts off just to get some relief.
My eyelids, chest and especially between my fingers were some of the worst.
And it wasn't just physically painful.
It was emotionally and mentally exhausting too.

I remember desperately wanting a hug for comfort so badly…
…but the pressure of a hug hurt.
I knew nothing about nutrition, traditional foods or looking at things differently. I just wanted someone to help me.

I saw doctors and specialists and spent all my money. I got nowhere with the prescriptions.
Then a workmate who knew what I was going through suggested I see his brother, a GP in Wellington.
So I flew to Wellington.
And my Dad actually flew down from Auckland to meet me and take me to the appointment.
20 years later, I'm still touched that he did that for me. Thanks Dad!
The Wellington GP was different.
He sat with me for around 40 minutes and actually explained things to me.
He told me to get off the steroid creams because, in his view, they weren't helping, and he also questioned the use of Aqueous Cream.
He ordered blood tests to investigate what I was reacting to.
And that's when we discovered seafood and peanuts were triggers for me.
Ironically, I had been taking fish oil capsules because I'd previously been told they would help my skin.
That appointment changed everything, and he charged $10!
I made the changes he recommended, and my skin healed.

But there was still one stubborn patch on my fore-arm that wouldn't disappear even 2 years later.

Then one day, I bought a goat's milk soap from the health shop.
And that patch went away.
That was my introduction to goats milk soap and ditching my body wash.
