The moment you become parents, suddenly the whole world wants to teach you how to raise your child. Everyone has advice, everyone has an opinion, and everyone seems to know what worked best “back in their day.”

But at the end of the day, when the advice stops and everyone goes home, it’s just you and your partner trying to figure it all out.

It’s the sleepless nights, the exhausting days, the overwhelming moments of uncertainty. It’s learning your baby’s cries, understanding their needs, questioning your decisions, and constantly wondering if you’re doing enough. It’s figuring things out together, often without the village everyone talks about.

And the truth is, no one else is living those moments for you.

Every generation parented with the knowledge, resources, and understanding they had at the time. And that’s okay. But just as you did what you believed was best for your children, please allow us the space to do what we believe is best for ours.

If you’re going to question our choices or share a parenting “hack,” let it come with reasoning, not just “that’s how we used to do it.” Because not everything done in the past was right, safe, or backed by science. Traditions aren’t automatically truths simply because they’ve been passed down for generations.

And perhaps what people don’t understand is that some of us aren’t just raising children. We’re also trying to break cycles.

We may not have a village helping us raise our child, but many of us grew up witnessing broken families, emotional wounds, childhood trauma, and the lasting effects of things that were once dismissed as “normal parenting.”

We’ve seen what happens when a child’s feelings are overlooked, when boundaries aren’t respected, and when emotional well-being is treated as an afterthought.

So yes, we may have more rules. We may be more cautious. We may set boundaries that seem unnecessary or excessive to others.

But those boundaries aren’t there to offend anyone. They’re there to protect our child from things we wish someone had protected us from.

We understand that childhood doesn’t simply end when a child grows up. The experiences, words, fears, and wounds of those early years can stay with someone for a lifetime.

And while everyone may have an opinion about what’s best for our child, nobody carries the same responsibility, love, worry, and commitment that we do as their parents.

The hardest part is being told how to parent by people who sometimes fail to recognise the very wounds their own parenting left behind.

Because if every old-school parenting method was truly perfect, why are so many adults today still trying to heal from their childhoods?

This isn’t about blaming an entire generation. It’s about acknowledging that just because something was accepted then doesn’t mean it should be repeated now.

You weren’t perfect parents. We won’t be perfect parents either. And that’s okay.

But we are willing to learn, unlearn, question, grow, and do things differently when we know better.

We don’t need everyone to agree with how we raise our child. We just need them to respect that we’re doing our best with the knowledge we have, the lessons we’ve learned, and the love we carry.

We’re not trying to raise our child the way the world has always done it. We’re trying to raise our child in a way that gives them fewer things to heal from when they’re older.

And if that means doing things differently, then so be it 🤍
