💧🔬 YOU DRANK THE WATER… NOW WHAT?! 🤭💦
Lymphies, have you ever taken a big sip of water and thought…
“Okay body… where exactly is this going?” 😂💧
Because that little sip is about to go on quite the journey!
And no… it does not simply fall into your tummy and somehow “wash out” your lymphatic system. 😅
Your body is MUCH cleverer than that. 🧠✨
🥤 STEP 1: YOUR GUT
After you drink water, it travels through your digestive tract.
Most water absorption happens in the small intestine, with additional water being absorbed in the large intestine.
From there, water enters your circulation. 🩸💧
🚗💨 STEP 2: INTO THE BLOODSTREAM
Now our little water molecules have transport! 😂
Water becomes part of your blood plasma and is distributed throughout the body.
But here comes the fascinating part…
Your body is constantly deciding where water needs to move to maintain fluid balance. ⚖️💦
🫧 STEP 3: AROUND YOUR CELLS
Some fluid moves from the tiny blood capillaries into the spaces surrounding your cells.
This is called interstitial fluid.
Your cells are basically living in their own little fluid neighbourhood. 🏡🔬💧
And this is where electrolytes become VERY interesting…
🧂 Sodium (Na⁺) is found mainly in the fluid OUTSIDE your cells.
🥑 Potassium (K⁺) is found mainly INSIDE your cells.
Together with many other tightly controlled processes, these electrolyte gradients help your body regulate fluid distribution and normal cell function. ⚡🧬
💧 STEP 4: WATER MEETS THE CELL
Water can move across cell membranes in response to differences in solute concentration — a process we commonly describe as osmosis.
So imagine your little cell sitting there…
🥺: “Is that water I see?”
💧: “COMING THROUGH!”
Cell afterwards:
😌✨ “AHHHH… THAT’S BETTER.”

🌿 AND WHERE DOES THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM COME IN?
THIS is the part our Lymphies will love. 💚
Not all fluid and proteins that enter the tissues return directly through the blood capillaries.
Your tiny lymphatic capillaries collect excess interstitial fluid, proteins and other substances from the tissues.
Once that fluid enters the lymphatic vessels, we call it lymph. 🌿💧
It then travels through the lymphatic system and is eventually returned to the bloodstream.
Pretty incredible, right?! 🤯
So when we talk about hydration and lymphatic health, we need to be careful with phrases like:
❌ “Water flushes your lymph.”
Your body isn’t a blocked drain that needs flushing. 🤭
A better way to say it is:
💧 Adequate hydration supports normal body-fluid balance and normal physiological function — including the environment in which your lymphatic system works.
Your kidneys, hormones, blood vessels, electrolytes, cells AND lymphatic system are all participating in an incredibly sophisticated balancing act every single day. 🧠🫀🩸🌿🔬

💚 LIFE AFTER GALLBLADDER REMOVAL… WHAT NOW?
We recently spoke about just how amazing the gallbladder is — and immediately a very important question came up:
“But what happens if I don’t HAVE a gallbladder anymore?”
First, the reassuring part:
👉 Your liver still makes bile.
👉 Your digestive system still works.
👉 You can absolutely live a healthy, normal life without a gallbladder.
But there is an important change in HOW bile reaches your intestines.
Let’s talk science. 🧬👇
🟢 BEFORE GALLBLADDER REMOVAL
Your liver continuously produces bile.
Your gallbladder’s job is not actually to make bile. Think of it more like a little storage and concentration pouch.
Between meals, bile is stored and concentrated inside the gallbladder.
Then you eat — particularly a meal containing fat.
Your small intestine releases hormones, especially cholecystokinin (CCK), which normally helps signal the gallbladder to contract.
💥 The gallbladder releases a concentrated amount of bile into the small intestine.
That bile helps your body emulsify fats, making them easier for digestive enzymes to break down and absorb.
🟡 AFTER GALLBLADDER REMOVAL
Here is where people sometimes get confused.
Your bile did NOT disappear with your gallbladder.
Your liver keeps producing it. ❤️
But now there is no gallbladder sitting underneath the liver storing and concentrating a larger amount between meals.
Instead:
🧬 Liver makes bile
⬇️
🟢 Bile travels through the bile ducts
⬇️
💧 Bile flows more continuously into the small intestine
So rather than having that gallbladder “reservoir” available to release concentrated bile with a meal, bile reaches the intestine in a more continuous, less concentrated flow.
And for most people, the body adapts very well.
🥑 BUT SOME PEOPLE NOTICE A DIFFERENCE WITH FAT
Especially during the weeks after surgery, a very large or fatty meal may be harder to tolerate.
Some people experience:
💨 Bloating
🚽 Loose stools or urgency
🤢 Nausea
🔥 Indigestion
💩 Changes in bowel movements
🥘 Discomfort after very fatty meals
This does not automatically mean something is wrong.
The digestive system is adjusting to a different pattern of bile delivery.
For many people these symptoms improve considerably with time.
🚽 WHY DO SOME PEOPLE GET DIARRHOEA?
This one is fascinating.
Bile acids normally help with fat digestion and are largely reabsorbed near the end of the small intestine.
But in some people after gallbladder removal, too many bile acids reach the colon.
Bile acids can stimulate fluid secretion and bowel movement in the colon.
The result?
👉 Frequent watery stools
👉 Urgency after eating
👉 Chronic diarrhoea
This is called bile acid diarrhoea.
And this is important:
⚠️ You do NOT simply have to live with it.
If diarrhoea continues after gallbladder surgery, speak to your doctor. Bile acid diarrhoea can be evaluated and there are treatments, including bile-acid-binding medications when appropriate.
🥗 SO HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY DIGESTION?
You usually don’t need a dramatic “gallbladder detox.”
Your body needs something much less exciting:
Consistency.
Especially early after surgery:
🥗 Start with smaller meals if large meals upset you.
🥑 Introduce dietary fats gradually rather than eating one enormous high-fat meal.
🌾 Include soluble fibre from foods such as oats, barley, fruit, vegetables, beans or psyllium if tolerated. Fibre can help regulate bowel movements.
💧 Stay adequately hydrated.
🍟 Pay attention to YOUR triggers. Very greasy, fried or extremely high-fat meals are common offenders.
And please remember:
Fat itself is not the enemy.
Your body still needs dietary fat for energy, cell membranes, hormones and absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
The goal isn’t necessarily NO FAT.
It is finding the amount and pattern your digestive system comfortably tolerates.
💊 DO I AUTOMATICALLY NEED DIGESTIVE ENZYMES OR BILE SUPPLEMENTS?
No.
Having your gallbladder removed does not automatically mean you need ox bile, digestive enzymes or a lifetime of supplements.
Your pancreas still produces digestive enzymes and your liver still produces bile.
If you have ongoing symptoms or suspected nutrient malabsorption, that deserves proper assessment rather than automatically adding supplements.
🚨 WHEN SHOULD I SPEAK TO MY DOCTOR?
Please seek medical advice if you develop persistent or worsening symptoms such as:
⚠️ Severe abdominal pain
⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Yellow skin or eyes
⚠️ Persistent vomiting
⚠️ Very pale/clay-coloured stools or unusually dark urine
⚠️ Ongoing diarrhoea
⚠️ Unexplained weight loss
⚠️ Symptoms of dehydration
Those symptoms shouldn’t simply be blamed on “not having a gallbladder.”
💚 THE BIG TAKEAWAY
Your gallbladder was useful — but losing it does not mean your digestive system has stopped working.
Your liver didn’t suddenly forget how to make bile.
Your pancreas didn’t stop making digestive enzymes.
Your intestines didn’t stop absorbing nutrients.
The route changed.
Your body now has to manage bile without its little storage reservoir.
And the human body is remarkably good at adapting. 🌿
