This year Barbershop Jordy has been open as a professional barbershop for 10 years.

In light of this, we are going to take you on a trip down memory lane, with some thoughts and photos.

BARBERSHOP JORDY X LEGAL THEFT

I Started my business venture in the back of Legal Theft clothing store on the 20th of January, I just had my 21st birthday and the world in front of me in Masterton whilst most of my school friends were in the middle of university or were travelling over seas.

Walk-ins were the way of trade at the time and by the end of the year I was averaging about 23 haircuts a day, the haircuts were much easier and cheaper in 2015, though it wasn’t all glory to begin with as some days I would only cut 1 or 2 clients. My theory was if I could give that client a wicked experience by doing the extras at a good price they’d be sure to come back and it worked.

Starting business was no easy task as I had no experience and was reluctant to take advice from my parents being a stubborn 21 year old and wanted to do things my way. Fortunately Id negotiated a very reasonable rental fee and I was strict enough to put all my tax money away for the year, which saved my arse for years to come.

On a side note top knot haircuts were in fashion and I ran a deal where you could get a cheap haircut if I cut your top knot off.

Nowadays I think back to this time and a part of me wants to be that driven, naive, 21 year old in the back of a clothing store.

This year Barbershop Jordy has been open as a professional barbershop for 10 years.

In light of this, we are going to take you on a trip down memory lane, with some thoughts and photos. But I have to start where my barbering Journey began.

TONZ BARBERSHOP

In 2010 I approached Tony Allsworth to do work experience in his barbershop, after just about a year of work experience Tony offered an apprenticeship in November. I was trained under the Hito barbering apprenticeship system. Tony was the king Barber of Masterton at this time and we bought a great experience, modern haircut styles and arguably revamped barbering to clients and the community of the Wairarapa.

Tony was very diligent and thorough in his training through my apprenticeship and passed down traditional barbering skills and techniques that were taught to him by his father Allan Allsworth.

We had some great times in and out of the barbershop and no one could compete with us in the Wairarapa at this time.

After 5 years working for Tony, I made the difficult decision to leave at the end of 2014 at the age of 22 to go on my barber journey.

I will always be great full for the opportunity and the skills that Tony gave me. Without Tonz, Barbershop Jordy wouldn’t exist.
