ECZEMA MANAGEMENT ‼️
Managing eczema and other reactive skin types during the hot and humid days /nights of summer or the cold chilly days and nights of winter, whichever is your most itchy and disruptive season here are some helpful tips so your life can be filled with more fun than frustration
⛄️⛸️🏂⛷️🏈 ⚽️🏐🏄🏽🏊🏼♀️🚣🏽♀️🤿
Knowing how to prepare for your itchy weather and understand how eczema is triggered by the different elements will help to manage reactions and as always, prevention is better than treatment when it comes to flare ups.
Summer triggers🔆
- sweat
- body temps
- pollen (grass/w**d)
- insect bites
- humidity
- salt water / chlorine
- chemicals in sunscreens
- sunburn
- heightened allergies
- dehydration
Winter triggers❄️
- rapid temperature changes
- cold dry winter air
- poor vitamin D absorption
- layering up with irritating fabrics
- leaving skin damp for a long period
- weakened immunity
HYDRATION 🚰 🩵
Drink plenty of water! Staying well hydrated helps to keep your body at a normal temperature so your skin doesn’t react to the excessive heat, a small pinch of (fine) pink Himalayan salt can also make a HUGE difference in preventing skin dehydration and improving your overall health. Unlike regular salt, pink himalayan contains over 80 different trace elements, including sodium, magnesium, zinc, calcium, and iron, making it very beneficial for your health, especially if you have skin conditions like eczema.
Water needs vary but based on your weight? The general rule is to drink one ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight or approx 1 1/2 cups for every 10 kg minimum.
STAY COOL 🌀
When temperatures are hot, blood vessels dilate in an attempt to cool you off, which can trigger inflammatory cells and make skin extra sensitive and vulnerable to flare.
Try carrying a hand held fan to cool hot skin, a water bottle or get in the shade where possible, use a cool compress of anything available thats cold, wear a sunhat and dress in light non fitting cotton clothes that help wick away moisture and minimise sweating.
✅KALM & KINDS Kawakawa cooling mist.
Minimise / Rinse off sweat❗️
Sweating is the body’s natural way of cooling you off, so in warmer weather you sweat more as your body tries to regulate its temperature, but sweat leaves behind trace elements that can irritate eczema. Sweat contains mainly water, which takes all the moisture out of the skin causing dryness and irritation, this environment then attracts bacteria which further inflames the skin. Moisture often builds up inside the elbows, behind the knees and around the neck, making these areas hot spots for flare-ups.
If you’re involved in a sweaty activity, rinse off right afterward and change into fresh clothes. Use water or better yet
✅KALM & KINDS SOOTHING BATH SOAK premixed in a water bottle to cool, soothe and rinse sweat. If you do rinse the skin, lightly pat dry and re-apply some eczema cream or moisturising sunscreen straight away, to lock the moisture back in.
SWIMMING 🏊🏼
Saltwater and chlorine can cause extra
dryness and irritation, Be sure to rinse off and moisturise.
At the pools!! 🏊🏼
Some people with eczema tolerate chlorinated swimming pools well, but for some it can irritate. Swim in an outdoor pool, outdoor pools are generally less damaging than indoor pools because they are better ventilated. If chlorine water bothers your skin, a quick shower after swimming in a pool is a good idea. Keep in mind that chlorine also removes natural oils, so it is important to moisturize right afterwards to help replace. Apply a non irritating moisturiser or
✅KALM & KIND ECZEMA CREAM
over all areas of skin directly after showering, when skin is still damp to soothe and replenish barrier.
At the beach!! ⛱️
The high concentrations of minerals in seawater, especially magnesium, may be beneficial to people with eczema. The sodium and iodine also present in ocean water have healing properties for skin. That said, saltwater can be uncomfortable and downright painful on inflamed skin, especially in young children–something to consider before booking a beach vacation. If you do go, if none a available take water with you to rinse off excess salt (which can have a drying effect on skin) after swimming and again follow with
✅KALM & KIND’S ECZEMA CREAM
to soothe and moisturise.
Bath & shower time!! 🚿🛀🏼
Your water should be cool to warm, as hot water will likely dry out your skin and make eczema symptoms worse. Additions of pink himalayan salt, magnesium flakes, or ground oats to bathwater can help soften the water and make it less stingy on inflammed skin. After you hop out, apply your ✅ECZEMA CREAM to damp skin before completely drying off to lock in as much moisture as possible
Water filters 💧
may be helpful to fit on tap or shower heads, these are very affordable, and easily replaceable, designed to remove chlorine and other harmful substances from water to protect your hair and skin, ensuring they retain their natural moisture and strength, just be sure it’s not a high pressure head as it may be too abrasive for sensitive skin.
SKINCARE PRODUCTS❗️
Soaps 🧼
The changing temperatures of winter can cause the skin to become more sensitive. This means that skincare products that wouldn’t usually irritate the skin can start to cause problems, such as contact dermatitis.
Soaps and detergent can contain harsh chemicals or fragrances that may irritate sensitive skin. Switch to natural or unscented skincare products to reduce irritation. Avoid soaps and washes that produce foam or bubbles too which are very drying to skin and liquid hand soaps containg ammonia, we use body wash in place of liquid hand soap to avoid ammonia. having eczema means your skin is sensitive and can greatly benefit from going sulphate free and all natural.
✅KALM KIND GENTLE CLEANSING GEL Or MCT OIL CLEANSE is great too and will also help to calm itch, irritaton and redness.
Try low fragrance wash powders suitable for sensitive skin, plant based or i find the cheaper brands have less additives and work great too. (Pams is my go-to)
Moisturisers 🧴
Moisturising is an important part of skincare for eczema, and is needed more so in the winter months. When applying do not use on irritated skin in hot temperatures or immediately after a shower or bath, wait for skin to cool so blood vessels are not dilated and sensitive.
When shopping for moisturisers, look for all natural oil based ones suitable for sensitive skin or try our ✅ KALM & KINDS BARRIER SUPPORT MOISTURISER for long lasting results and suitable for the most sensitive skin. Some but not all natural plant oils can be beneficial used on very sensitive or baby skin. Apply immediately after bath or shower to very damp skin to trap the water in. Coconut, Jojoba, sweet almond are my top pics I would NOT recommend using olive oil on eczema affected skin.
Contact allergy or sensitivity☠️
Many skincare additives like emulsifiers, fragrance, preservatives, silicones etc can cause skin sensitivity or irritation.
Signs of sensitivity to a moisturiser
• aggrivation or inflammation of eczema after using is an obvious tell.
• If your moisturiser is soaking in like nothing and skin still drying out can be another sign.
•look for more oil based thicker moisturisers.
•Do not use hand sanitizers ⚠️
Patch testing🫶🏼
If you suspect a sensitivity to an ingredient but am unsure, patch test your skincare products. Before use put a small amount on an patch of skin like forearm or thigh somewhere out of sight maybe and put a band-aid on it leave it there for the next 24-48 hours. Contact eczema can take days to react by then you have used alot more and eaten a range of food also so it’s impossible to pin point the trigger. If you patch test that area you had covered will show signs of inflammation so you can then narrow down what the cause is.
HEIGHTENED ALLERGIES❗️
Allergies cause the immune system to over-react which then causes inflammation from the inside out and results in damaged/weakened skin barrier and sensitivities internal and external, it is important to try and identify these.
While warm temperatures and blooming flowers are great news for outdoor activities, a change in season can bring an increase in people’s allergies. In late spring and early summer, grass pollen tends to be highest, while in late summer, w**d pollens are high that can also trigger and worsen eczema along with other problems like asthma and hay fever.
🔆Oral antihistamines liquid or other can be especially helpful when taken………
° At the beginning of and during a flare up to help minimise itch and scratching so skin can heal faster.
° Hot nights with sticky humid conditions can really bring on the itch. Taking before bed will ensure a much better sleep and avoid skin being destroyed by continual scatching throughout the night.
° when the day is planned with long hours
outdoors in the heat, taking it before leaving home that morning can protect from irritation and flare up.
° If a planned activity has the potential to
expose you to an allergen like a bush walk,
a sports event being on grass all day long,
a place where certain animals may be.
Whatever your allergen may be you can
protect yourself before exposure to help
avoid or minimize severity and chances of an allergic reaction and skin flare up.
+ CROSS-REACTIVITY ❗️
is when your body gets confused, mistaking one allergen for another because the proteins in two substances are similar enough to fool your immune system.
⬇️
Privet trees - cross- reaction likely with Olive trees , evergreen ash and golden ash trees.
Grass pollen - cross-reaction is possible with foods: celery, wheat, carrot, melon, watermelon, tomato, oranges, potatoes, and peanuts.
Birch pollen - cross-reacts with the following foods: apple, pear,
cherry, apricot, peach, mango, kiwi, celery, carrot, poppy seed,
and pepper.
Dust Mites and Seafood Allergy
There is a similar link between house dust mite allergy and a shellfish allergy.
Winter immunity❗️
Viral illness is a common triggers that most people don’t realize is causing their eczema to flare, If you get something like a common cold or flu it can increase all the inflammation in the body including eczema.
A viral illness that impacts the skin can cause pre-existing patches of eczema to swell and itch, other conditions linked to eczema that can be triggered by aggravated inflammation due to viruses and infection: Molluscum contagiosum, which produces small, raised bumps on the skin that can turn red or pink, and eczema herpeticum, a painful, blistering rash that can accompany a cold sore virus, impetigo or school sores and hand foot & mouth.
When the body has a viral attack the immune system is busy fighting it off and can do with some extra support.
When we’re sick sometimes we cant eat
•keep nails short and hands clean
•get some sun to soak up vitamin D
•take immune support supplements when unable to eat a balanced diet.
•If a child is a fussy eater and has eczema they may need immune support for kids.
•Vitamin D is important in skin health.
•Vitamin C is important for immune support
•Copper for immune function
•since most with eczema can’t tolerate citrus fruits for vitamin C you can supplement with gummies, tablets or the fizzies in a tube are great too just dissolve in a glass of water once per day with added Vitamin D and zinc for extra skin support.
INSECT BITES❗️
Insect bites cause the immune system to release a sudden outpour of pro-inflammatory chemicals that can affect eczema prone skin and cause flare ups.
Use natural ingredients like-
✅KALM & KIND BUG OFF REPELLENT
In a simple non messy roller that can be used with diffuser bracelets/anklets.
Also help skin to recover and treat itching caused from other insect bites.
✅KA KITE KUTU REPELLENT also on an easy roller application that your little ones can do themselves and they both smell great🫶🏼
SUN PROTECTION❗️
Ensure daily use of mineral or natural sunscreen with added moisturising benefits
People with eczema are more susceptible to sun damage and should always use sunscreen when outdoors. Many sunscreen ingredients can worsen eczema symptoms. Most eczema sufferers do better with natural sunscreens (use minerals zinc oxide or titanium oxide to block UV rays) rather than chemical sunscreens
(that use chemicals to absorb them)
Some NZ made & natural/mineral sunscreens made with the absolute best skin loving ingredients🫶🏼
(can purchase these online)
✔️SAVVY TOUCH mango butter sun shade
✔️MY SUNSHINE natural organic sunscreen
✔️SOL + SEA mineral sunscreen
✔️TEMPLE + CO mineral sunscreen
✔️EARTHS KITCHEN all natural sun
protection
For an extra light facial sunscreen (these aren’t nz made but are my faves)
✔️AIRYDAY mineral mousse
✔️LA ROCHE POSAY mineral sunscreen
🚫Avoid sunblocks with synthetic and chemical ingredients at all costs, these will further irritate and damage reactive skin types! look for these on the ingredient list:
⚠️OXYBENZONE
⚠️AVOBENZONE
⚠️OCTISALATE
⚠️OCTOCRYLENE
⚠️HOMOSALATE
⚠️OCTINOXATE
RAPID TEMP CHANGES❗️
When the skin is experiencing big changes in temperature, it starts to dry and feel itchy. In winter the cycle of moving from the cold air outside to the warm and dry air indoors can make the skin dry and cracked.
People can reduce eczema flare-ups by avoiding sudden changes in temperature. Wear gloves, scarves, and hats when outside to stop the skin from getting cold.
Transition slowly between temperatures by using the following strategies:
•Try not to let your skin get cold. People can maintain a more even body temperature by staying inside when possible. Wrap up well when going outside.
•Protect sensitive areas from rapid temperature changes. If you tend to get eczema on your hands, wear gloves every time you go outside.
•Avoid hot water when you are cold. When you come in from the cold, it may be tempting to wash your hands in very warm water, but the quick change in temperature can irritate the skin. Wait until you have warmed up before using warm water.
•Keep a pot of water on the fire when possible and avoid over using heat pumps.
✔️look into probiotics for optional and extra skin health and gut support against food sensitivities and eczema.
✔️Vitamin D for skin and immune support
✔️Vitamin C for immune support
✔️Copper is vital for immune health
Other additional management tips
When skin is very dry it makes it difficult for eczema cream to pe*****te into the skin so firstly dampen the skin or use a small amount of non irritating moisturiser like
✅KALM & KIND BARRIER SUPPORT MOISTURISER to soften it up.
Boost body’s magnesium levels (dermal absorption works the fastest and best way)
Swim in the salt water or …
✅KALM & KIND MAGNESIUM SOLE SPRAY
Use every night before bed, 2-3 sprays on soles of feet. When levels are low, skin will sting a little when water evaporates and leaves the salt, as levels rise this effect will lessen. The soles of feet are less sensitive to the itch.
✅KALM & KIND NOURISH-HYDRATE-ELIMINATE body and face spray for wide spread inflammation (for 10yrs +)
ECZEMA FLARES‼️
-Use ✅KALM&KIND SOOTHING BATH SOAK for flare ups in a tub or premixed in a water bottle. Dab over skin with a cloth to stop further inflammation and itch, sooth and cool down
-Stay out of the heat. Getting cool will also avoid further inflammation.
-Take a bleach bath if skin is frequently
getting infected. about 10 mls per 10 litres
-Apply KALM & KIND eczema cream to cooled damp skin to sooth, strengthen barrier and desensitise.
-Take antihistamines to reduce severity.
-Minimise sugar, dairy and wheat intake during healing time, will speed the process not prolong.
-Stress can be a major cause of eczema flares too. In children for example they may be stressed from breastfed to bottle fed transitions, missing mum when going to kohanga little distresses can cause flares. Give them some extra attention at these times and lots of cuddles and attention. Keep them home from kohanga if can to settle skin.
Hope this will enlighten some of you and brighten up your summer. 🏄♂️ 🐎
STAY SAFE OUT THERE ♥️
