Have you ever wondered how anti-ageing injectable treatment actually works? Here is what you need to know about anti-wrinkle treatment.
Botulinum Toxin A is a protein injected beneath the skin into the muscle, which then acts within muscle cells to prevent the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. So what does this actually mean?
In short, the Botulinum Toxin is preventing the muscle cells from communicating with one another, which in practical terms results in temporary muscle paralysis. Sounds scary, but I promise it’s not!
One of the reasons why we get fine lines and wrinkles as we age is because the muscles of the face contract as we make expressions when talking, laughing, frowning etc. Over time, the collagen and elastin fibres of the overlying skin break down due to repeated contraction and relaxation resulting in wrinkles.
Fortunately Botulinum Toxin A can act to correct lines and wrinkles by causing the muscle or muscle group responsible for the wrinkles to go to sleep for 3-4 months. In the absence of contraction or relaxation of the muscle, the skin smooths out YAY.
Something which is super important to know is that if you continue to immobilise the muscle causing wrinkles i.e. have consistent treatment when due, you can have permanent reduction in expression lines. Obviously results can vary from client to client. However, what we do observe is that muscle paralysis leads to atrophy of the muscle, meaning that it becomes weaker. Therefore, we hope to reduce the amount of Botulinum Toxin A used for treatment and extend time between treatments.

We are super excited to share with you a little bit more about My Elixir’s owner and operator Dr Lauren Osborne.
Dr Lauren holds degrees in Biological Science (BSc Canterbury University) as well as well as a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MbChB Otago University).
She has been working as a fully qualified Doctor for almost 7 years in fields such as Women’s Health, General Practice, General Medicine and Surgery as well as Mental Health.
She has also undertaken training in the administration of anti-ageing injectables and dermal fillers and has accumulated extensive practical experience in this field.
Her philosophy around cosmetic injectables focuses on providing you with results, whilst ensuring affordability and value for your money. She believes that aesthetic medicine is a long-term journey between Aesthetician and Client, and that the best results will be seen over time based on a carefully formulated, individualised treatment plan.
Here at My Elixir Aesthetics, we want you to feel at ease and comfortable with your treatment, and look forward to developing a relationship which sees YOU at the forefront. We want you to be involved, informed and able to give feedback in order to make sure that over time you see results that help you to feel more confident.
Dr Lauren’s difference as a Cosmetic Practitioner is that prior to the administration of injectables, a thorough consultation will be conducted in order to personalise your treatment based upon your unique musculature and facial features. She has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy as part of her medical training, and therefore understands the function as well as the nerve and vascular pattern of each target muscle. This means that those common unwanted effects are much less likely to occur, such as eyelid and brow droop (ptosis), particularly with neurotoxin.
