Nicholas Culpeper was the 17th century rebel herbalist who dared to write a 'complete herbal' in plain English to empower the 'common people.' Previously things were written in Latin so only accessible to those few educated to understand Latin.

The Bible is the only book to be in-print for a longer period of time than Culpeper's, The Complete Herbal.

Culpeper wrote his books to help the poor be able to take care of themselves. They could not afford the expensive--and what Culpeper considered ineffective--therapies of the greedy physicians.

I love what he has to say in the 1835 edition Introduction...
"...I consulted with my two brothers, Dr. Reason and Dr. Experience, and took a voyage to visit my mother Nature, by whose advice, together with the help of Dr. Diligence, I at last obtained my desire; and, being warned by Mr. Honesty, a stranger in our days, to publish it to the world, I have done it."

He is also known for providing his services for free; financial support through his own and his wife's noble bloodlines aided this principled endeavor.

Culpeper only lived to age 37, but what he accomplished and what we can still learn from has lasted for centuries!
