Here's some really interesting info about Kawakawa and it's health benefits when we eat it.

The leaves, dried or fresh, can be steeped in hot water to make a pleasant tasting tea. It aides digestion and soothes upset tummies which makes it an effective yet gentle remedy for calming nausea.

The tree produces flowers/berries, either female or male. Both can be ingested but please be moderate in your consumption as they can have a laxative effect!

The beginning of my balm journey started around 6 years ago, with walks around the bush area of where we lived at the time, in rural Pukekohe, and stumbling across hillsides covered in Kawakawa trees.

One of my sisters pointed them out in a photo I had taken, and from there my education on Kawakawa has continued on an upward trajectory!!

Our parents taught us about different plants, gardening, pickling vegetables and making jam from fruit.
It was only a matter of time before I started making balm!

Kawakawa came into my life and I set about learning, as much as possible, from my Māori friends and rongoā Māori groups about how to respect the land, the plant and go about the process of making my product.

It took several tries to get the ratio of oils to beeswax correct, and a small group of long suffering friends and family who would test out each batch as I tried to perfect it.

Seeing the positive effects our Kawakawa balm has had on my whānau, friends, their tamariki, and then hearing from people who have had wonderful benefits from using our balm is what it is all about for me!
