Sanflora Wellbeing
Naturally Gentle. Honestly You. We believe skincare should be more than just clean - it should be soulful. A ritual. A return to yourself πΊ.
Inspired by nature, backed by knowledge and locally made with love π. For your daily dose of nature's kindness.
Here's something that is important, Sanflora Friends: in a humid climate, heavier isn't better β it can actually work against you.
When the air is already holding a lot of moisture, sweat struggles to evaporate off the skin. So a rich cream that would sink in beautifully in a dry climate just sits on top in the tropics, trapping sweat, oil, and heat underneath. That's the "suffocating" feeling so many of us notice the moment we land somewhere tropical.
This is exactly why my Hydrate Mist has become part of my daily routine in Thailand β cooling cucumber hydrosol, soothing aloe vera, and a touch of mandarin. It delivers real hydration without adding any oil or weight, so it works with the humidity rather than fighting it. A few spritzes after cleansing, morning and afternoon, and my skin feels calm and refreshed rather than overloaded.
Sometimes the most nourishing thing you can do for your skin in the tropics is give it less, not more.

Sanflora Friends,π΄
Every time when I'm in Thailand, the same thing happens β within days my skin feels different. Softer. Plumper. But also shinier by midday, in a way it never is back home in Queenstown's dry air.
For years I just accepted this as "tropical skin." This year I decided to actually follow it properly. This series is my skin's journey across three very different climates β New Zealand's winter, Thailand's humidity, and a European summer. Same skin, same person, three completely different sets of needs.
It's a good reminder, as a formulator, that there's no single "correct" skincare routine β only the right routine for the climate your skin is actually in. Over the next few posts I want to share what I'm learning from my time in hot, tropical weather. And how I adjust my own routine to work with this climate instead of against it.
Stay warm, wherever you are πΏ
This one's for anyone whose skin pulls tight in winter β whether that's naturally dry, very dry, or skin that's just started needing a bit more richness than it used to.
So here's where the last few posts land: winter skin needs moisture put back and lipids replaced to stop it escaping again. In practice that's a hydrating tonic (Manuka or Rose Water) first for hydration and hyaluronic acid, a rich night cream (Harakeke or Rose) next, and the Bloom Q10 Face Serum last β it's oil-based, so it sits on top and seals everything in rather than sinking underneath.
What ties all three together is that none of it is synthetic. Real manuka, real rose, real harakeke β ingredients your skin already knows how to use, rather than lab-made substitutes doing an approximation of the job.
Mine's exactly the same every winter β this is the routine that gets me through it.
Talk soon ππΏ
Last piece of the winter routine, and the order matters here: the Bloom Q10 Face Serum is oil-based, so it goes on top of everything else, not underneath it β sealing in the moisture and lipids you've just applied.
πΈπΈπΈπΈπΈπΈπΈ
It's worth talking about what's actually in it, though, because it's doing more than sealing. It's rich in vitamin A, which helps address the effects of photodamage, supports skin elasticity, and works on discolouration, alongside Omega 9 for deep moisturising. The standout, though, is our natural Coenzyme Q10 β a potent antioxidant that helps safeguard skin against UV damage, supports healthy collagen production, and helps protect your skin's structural integrity over time. Jasmine and frankincense essential oils bring their own long history in natural skincare too, both known for calming and renewing the skin. πͺ·πͺ·πͺ·

Onto step two: replacing the lipids winter takes away. π«
A rich night cream β Harakeke or Rose, depending what you prefer β is doing real work here, not just sitting on the surface for an hour. This is the step that actually addresses the flaking and tightness, rather than just the thirsty feeling.
Both are built on plant oils with their own naturally occurring fatty acids, so your skin is getting the real thing rather than a synthetic substitute standing in for it. πΉ

Given what I shared about winter skin losing moisture, here's step one of putting it back: a hydrating tonic, straight after cleansing.
Both the Manuka Hydrating Tonic and Rose Water Hydrating Tonic carry hyaluronic acid, which is worth knowing about β it can hold many times its own weight in water right at the skin's surface.
Ours is drawn from real πΈ manuka πΈ and
πΉ rose πΉ rather than synthesised in a lab, which matters to me as much as the science does.
It's a small step in a routine, but honestly the one I see people skip most.
Following on from moisture, here's the second half of what's happening to skin in winter.
Alongside losing water, your skin's own fats β the lipids that hold its barrier together β get depleted too. That's why winter skin doesn't just feel dry, it can flake, redden, look a bit ashy, and itch, sometimes all at once.
It's exactly why I've always chosen plant oils and butters over mineral oil or synthetic alternatives β they mirror your skin's own lipid structure much more closely, so they replace what's missing rather than just coating over it.
Two separate problems, which means two different fixes. That's exactly what the next few posts are about.

One thing I want to unpack this week: why winter skin feels the way it does. βοΈ
The first half of the story is moisture. Cold air simply holds less water than warm air, and it draws moisture straight out of your skin rather than the other way round. That tight, thirsty feeling isn't your imagination β it's a straightforward response to the air around you.
This is part of why I lean on plant-derived hydrating ingredients rather than synthetic ones β some of them tend to be structurally closer to what your own skin produces, so they're absorbed and used rather than just sitting on the surface. π¦
There's a second half to this story too, which I'll get into next post. Stay moisturised π©΅

Hello Sanflora Friends,
I keep thinking about how different my skin has looked and felt this year, depending on what part of the world I was. New Zealand winter, my skin tight and hugely in need of deep care. Then Thailand β the complete opposite, shiny within an hour of waking up. Europe in high summer, where somehow I needed a light mist and a heavier cream in the same week.
It made me realise how much we treat "skincare" as one fixed routine, when really our skin is responding to wherever we are and whatever season we're in. It's also reminded me why I formulate with plant-based ingredients rather than synthetic ones β skin that's adapting to its surroundings needs something it can actually recognise and work with, not a one-size-fits-all formula.
Over the next few weeks I'll walk through what's happening with skin in each of different climates and seasons, and what actually helps.
Let's start with the NZ winter chapter of it. If your skin's feeling tighter than usual β that's not just you. That's what winter and dry air does.

We're on the road back to Switzerland, and France gave us the most beautiful goodbye. π»
A sunflower field stretching as far as we could see β golden, and completely breathtaking in the afternoon light. I had to stop. Some things demand that you just stop and take them in.
This Herbal Nomad journey is almost over. From the rose bloom of Switzerland to the geranium of the Alps, through the lavender, rosemary, clary sage and everlasting of Provence, into the orange groves of Spainβ and now this. One last golden field to send us on our way.
I'm carrying so much home with me. Beautiful organic essential oils sourced directly from the growers who tend them. Conversations with makers and farmers who have dedicated their lives to these plants. A renewed sense of why botanical skincare, done honestly, matters so much.
And of course β so many ideas for you. For current Sanflora products and new ones still taking shape. I can't wait to share them.
And to all my Sanflora Friends β wherever you are β I'm sending you sun and love from this golden French countryside. πβοΈπΏ
