Why does the cape and the salon mirror betray us this way!? 😂

Such a humbling experience 😂

We always love giving a dessert name for a hair colour don't we! I aptly named this "Pumpkin Pie" 🎃
My client however.. she thought it was more like Lasagne 😂 tomatoey with Béchamel blonde 😂😂

Both make me hungry 😋

I could totally get on board with savory inspo lmfao

I hear this surprisingly often 😂

“I’ve followed your work for ages, but I don’t want rainbow hair.” “I wish you did normal colours.” “I’m probably a boring client because I just want blonde…”

PAAHHLEASE. I like doing hair. 😂

One of my favourite things about this job is the variation! Give me a blonde gimme a brunette give me copper, grey blending, dimensional colour, something soft and expensive looking im still going to nerd out it and i can customise the absolute s**t out of a brunette just as much as I can a rainbow.

The fun part for me is making something that feels like it was made for YOU, custom and thoughtful not ticking off how many colours I managed to put on your head.

PINCH. ME. 🥹

Today I found out I’m a finalist for Professional Hairdresser of the Year at the New Zealand Hair Awards and this one made me proper emotional 🥹

I genuinely can’t quite believe I get to share that finalist platform with some of the BIG BOY NAMES. Hairdressers I’ve watched, admired and respected within the NZ industry for years. And somehow my little face is up there too. What the f**k. 😭

This category is a really personal one to enter. It’s not just about the hair you create. You have to pull apart your career, your journey, your contribution to the industry, what you stand for, what you’ve built and where you’re going. It’s a pretty immersive entry and I poured a LOT into mine, so getting across that finalist line feels PRETTYY GOOD!

And the way I found out 😂
I was spending my Sunday at curly education with the amazing Tahni Daniels, when Michelle Marsh, who is ALSO a finalist in this category, came over and told me. And then I find out my amazing husband is a finalist for educator of the year, a role he's given his all to 🥹

Cue the two of us having a ridiculous little silent happy dance in our chairs while trying to still pay attention to the educator. 😂

I’m just so so proud.

Final images of my Janet look 🖤

These ones probably sum up one of the things I love most about Rocky Horror. It’s a complete f**king mishmash of references.

I recently had the absolute honour of listening to a podcast interview with Richard O’Brien where he actually got to see my images, had a quick look and said they were really cool. So obviously I can die happy now.

Something he talked about was that Rocky Horror was created as entertainment. It became this enormous cultural phenomenon and came to mean so much to so many people, but at its core, it pulled from all these different bits of pop culture, sci-fi, horror, B movies, glamour and camp and threw them together.

So while this look is Janet inspired, there’s also a bit of Bride of Frankenstein, a bit vintage, a little China doll, some old school horror glamour and a little nod to Over at the Frankenstein Place, and to the beautifulness of borrowing from everywhere and turning it into something new.

There’s a light… ✨

LOOK THREE — JANET ❤️‍🔥

Touch-a, touch-a, touch-a, touch me…

My third look from my Rocky Horror collection was inspired by Janet.

Janet starts the film as the closest thing we have to normal. Proper, innocent, restrained, following the rules. And then Rocky Horror slowly dismantles what normal is supposed to look like anyway.

For me, Touch Me is the point where Janet stops being passive in her own sexuality. She wants, she desires, she asks for it, and there’s something really f**king powerful about a woman owning that without shame. Femininity doesn’t have to equal innocence, and sexual desire doesn’t make her any less feminine.

I wanted the hair to feel like that transformation. Still soft and feminine, but messy, tactile, excessive I used loads of different chrome powders, tinsel, contrasting textures and this almost spiderweb effect with synthetic hair throughout, just layering s**t until it felt right.

Thats one of my favourite things about Janet. She enters Rocky Horror as the “normal” one.

Bu by the end, there is no normal

Another shot of my Rocky 🧪⚡️

My weird little lab grown humanoid

This was another image I entered into the New Zealand Hair Awards that didn’t make the finals, but I’m still so f**king fond of this entire look. The Science Fiction Double Feature influence really got its claws into me with this one. The bust used to be a closed circuit and actually run which would have been fun if I could have figured that out 😂
