Male hair growth is heavily influenced by androgens, particularly testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

This is why areas such as the face, neck, chest, abdomen, shoulders and back can develop thicker, coarser terminal hair and why these areas can behave differently during hair removal compared with other parts of the body.

IPL and laser hair removal work by targeting melanin within the hair. The absorbed light is converted into heat, damaging structures within the follicle responsible for producing new hair.

However, treatment is only effective when the hair is in its active anagen growth phase, and not every follicle enters this phase at the same time.
This is why male hair removal requires multiple treatments at correctly spaced intervals rather than a single session.

Depending on the concern being treated, your therapist may be looking for anything from mild erythema (redness) through to petechiae (pinpoint bleeding) Petechiae occur when tiny capillaries within the dermis are disrupted during treatment. This is considered a normal and expected endpoint when working at depths required for concerns such as acne scarring, where greater stimulation of the skin's wound healing response is often required⁠
