I nearly didn’t post this because I know to anyone else it probably looks ridiculous. But grief has made me sentimental over some of the most random s**t and apparently expired juice and old water made the list lol.

For those who’ve lost someone you love, how did you eventually let go of their things? Or are there some things you still can’t bring yourself to part with? I mean I feel I should get rid of the expired juice 😂

Grief is crying because you miss them then getting pi**ed off because they really left you here with responsibilities.

A little reset for the wairua, some much-needed girl time and a belated birthday celebration all in one.

After such an emotional milestone I feel like this was exactly what my heart needed. So grateful for my mates.

If there’s one thing this past year has taught me, it’s just how rich I am in love and friendship. 🥹❤️‍🩹

On Friday night, I stood with two of my two best mates, eating McDonald’s, maybe a little bit tipsy, laughing and singing Ka Poipoia at 10:40pm. The very same waiata we sang as my husband took his last breath, exactly one year earlier.

I wanted to revisit that moment, not with the heartbreak we experienced that night but with the love and laughter that has carried me through this past year.

To have people who can sit with you through your darkest moments and still be there to share the beautiful ones is something I’ll never take for granted.

My heart is so full from the weekend. I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful way to acknowledge my love’s one year. 🤍

Yesterday marked 365 days since our lives changed forever. A whole year of learning to navigate life without you physically here.

We spent the day surrounded by all the people you love and the people who continue to keep your memory alive.

This year wasn’t about doing anything big. Just taking the time to acknowledge you, reflect on the year that’s been and give thanks for the life we got to share with you.

Never above, never below, always beside.

I remember while you were in hospital the nurses telling me “I really think he’s holding on till your birthday. He keeps saying he wants to make it home for you. You should let him know that it’s ok if he doesn’t and it’s ok to let go, cause he’s really holding on.”

I refused.

Because inside me I knew if I said those words to you, you would.

You came home the day before my birthday.
You spent my 30th birthday with me.
And you stayed for another 9 days.

Maybe I was selfish.
Maybe I just wasn’t ready.
Maybe no amount of time would ever have been enough.

But I got those 9 extra days with you.

And now here I am, one year later, spending my 31st birthday at your urupā.

What a difference a year can make.

Through grief and heartbreak, through all the changes this past year has brought. YOU my beautiful child have still found ways to laugh, grow, love and be completely you.

Birthday prep looks a little different these days. It’s part excitement and part heartbreak but if there’s one thing I’ll always do, it’s make sure our babies still feel celebrated.

Te Mātahi o Te Tau ✨

One of our favourite times of the year, and one of my kids favourite memories with their daddy.

Yesterday we attended a hautapu at TWOM. It was beautiful watching my kids experience something different to what our usual Matariki looks like while we still hold close the traditions we’ve created as a whānau and will continue to carry on each year.
