Optimizing Skin Recovery: The Scientific Benefits of Native Collagen Post-Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a widely used dermatological procedure that mechanically exfoliates the stratum corneum, stimulating epidermal turnover and enhancing skin texture and tone (Karimipour et al., 2010). While this treatment provides numerous benefits, it temporarily disrupts the skin barrier, increasing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and susceptibility to environmental aggressors (Gordon et al., 2004). To optimize post-procedural healing, native collagen supplementation has been explored as a beneficial intervention.

What is Native Collagen?
Native collagen is an intact, triple-helical protein structure that closely mimics endogenous human collagen. Unlike hydrolyzed collagen, which is enzymatically broken down into peptides, native collagen retains its structural and functional integrity, making it more bioavailable for topical application (Ricard-Blum, 2011). This structural preservation enhances its role in skin regeneration and moisture retention.

How Microdermabrasion Affects the Skin.
Microdermabrasion initiates controlled epidermal abrasion, leading to keratinocyte activation and upregulation of growth factors such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) (El-Domyati et al., 2016). However, the mechanical exfoliation also reduces the lipid barrier function, leading to transient inflammation and increased skin sensitivity. The activation of wound healing pathways necessitates supportive post-procedure care to mitigate irritation and optimize dermal repair.

The Benefits of Native Collagen Post-Microdermabrasion
Enhanced Hydration – Native collagen forms a bioactive matrix on the skin, reducing TEWL and improving water retention (Bolke et al., 2019).
Accelerated Healing – Studies indicate that native collagen enhances fibroblast proliferation and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, leading to improved wound healing and tissue regeneration (Cheng et al., 2017).
Reduced Redness and Inflammation – Collagen peptides exhibit anti-inflammatory properties by modulating cytokine expression and reducing oxidative stress, which helps minimize erythema post-microdermabrasion (Schagen, 2017).
Improved Skin Elasticity – Native collagen supports dermal fibroblast activity and collagen biosynthesis, reinforcing ECM integrity and reducing skin laxity (Postlethwaite et al., 1978).
Protection Against Free Radicals – Collagen-derived peptides have been shown to possess antioxidative properties, neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and preventing photoaging (Campos et al., 2018).
How to Use Native Collagen After Microdermabrasion
Topical application of native collagen in the form of hydrogel can enhance the treatment and aid in post-microdermabrasion recovery. Product is free from alcohols, parabens, and artificial fragrances to prioritized and minimize irritation. Clinical research suggests that applying native collagen to damp skin enhances pe*******on and efficacy (Zague, 2008). Additionally, combining it with occlusive agents, such as hyaluronic acid, further enhances hydration and barrier function.

Conclusion
The integration of native collagen into post-microdermabrasion skincare regimens offers significant dermatological benefits, including enhanced hydration, accelerated healing, and improved skin resilience. Scientific studies substantiate its role in skin regeneration, making it a valuable component for optimizing procedural outcomes.

Just got back from a meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to New Zealand – Patryk Błaszczak. I have to say, it was a fantastic event that offered a fresh perspective on Poland, the investments of Polish companies in New Zealand, as well as New Zealand companies investing in Poland and more broadly in the EU.

Having lived in New Zealand for over 12 years, my view of Poland has changed significantly since I left. I now see it as a completely different country from the one I was born and raised in! That was, in fact, the biggest surprise of today’s meeting.

Warm greetings to all fellow Poles and friends in New Zealand and in other parts of the world! 🤗

Best,
Pawel
