I was born with a rare heart condition. Given a 1% chance of life. My mum, Sally-Anne, refused to accept that. She fought for me, carried me, and enabled me to reach adulthood against every odd they gave her.

The Brain Garden Trust is my tribute to her. To her love. To everything she poured into a child the world had already written off.

Every year, a significant number of New Zealand children are born or diagnosed with life-changing, long-term health conditions. They deserve the same fighting chance she gave me. That's why this charity exists.

We provide mindfulness-based support to children living with long-term health or neurodivergent conditions — and to the families who love them, who often feel unprepared and helpless while navigating a life they didn't prepare for.

Living with a long-term condition isn't game over. It's just a different journey. 💚

I don’t know about you, but I really struggle with taking time out. 🌿

I often tell my massage and coaching clients how important it is to take well-being days. To rest, pause and look after yourself, so you can actually keep showing up. But practising what I preach? That’s the hard part.

I can’t care for others the way I do in my work if I’m running on empty. And I can’t turn up for my family and friends either.

Still, a day off with no “productivity” feels really uncomfortable. So today I’ve:

🏊 Been for a swim (it’s part of my mental health)
🛍️ Done a little shopping
😴 Had a nap
💪 Got a session with my new PT coming up

And that’s about it. Resting now means I can fully show up for my clients for the rest of the week.

How do you handle taking time out? Do you struggle with it too? 👇

Exciting news! 🏡

Emma Kate Wellbeing is moving back to my Churton Park premises at some point in October!

I’m so grateful for how welcoming Capital Gateway has been to my clients and me. I’ll really miss you all. Jess and I can’t wait to welcome you back to the cabin and show you our new home, which is finally finished.

Booking: Please keep booking as usual through the online system. It will show Capital Gateway until it changes. When I move, I’ll give you plenty of notice of any change to your appointment’s location or date, so please don’t panic.

New to me? I’m just one stop off the motorway from Newlands, the next stop heading northbound. There’s plenty of parking in my driveway and on the street, so it’s super easy.

As soon as I have a moving date, I’ll let you know. It’s just too exciting to keep to myself!

There are months when I feel it more deeply than others. October is one of them.

The spring light comes through my studio window. Clients arrive with that familiar mix of exhaustion and hope — tired from winter, ready to feel different. And I get to be the person who helps that shift happen.

That's not a small thing. That's everything.

I didn't choose this work because it was easy. I chose it — and then it chose me back — because I know what it feels like to need someone to hold space for your body when you can't do it yourself.

If you've been putting off booking, October is a beautiful place to begin again. 🌸

This week I only swam twice because I was recovering from an injury. Today I got 4 personal bests. 🏊‍♂️

Rest is the hardest part of training for me. My brain screams “go train!” even when I know better.

But the proof is right here:

✅ Fitness is built during recovery, not just in the pool
✅ Fatigue hides how fast you really are
✅ Rest keeps you out of injury, which I’ve just learned firsthand

A rest day isn’t time off from the program. It IS the program.

So if you’re struggling to slow down, remember this: less training, 4 PBs. 💪

What’s the hardest part of rest for you? 👇

Want a shorter version, or a punchy line to put on the image itself, like "Less t“aining. 4 PBs.”?

Your feet probably don't get much attention.

Until they hurt.

But they're working hard every single day — supporting you through walking, standing, running, working and everything in between.

Try giving them a little more attention this week.

👣 Stretch your toes
👣 Move your ankles
👣 Strengthen your feet
👣 Take a walk
👣 Give your soles a gentle massage

And if you have persistent foot pain, don't simply push through it. It's worth getting appropriate professional advice.

Your feet carry you everywhere.

They deserve some care too. 🌿

Save this post for your next self-care day.

You’ll spend so many of them working, caring, helping, planning, and showing up for everyone else.

Can you keep just one hour for yourself? 🤍

One hour to slow down.
One hour to breathe.
One hour where your body gets to be cared for.

You don’t have to earn rest. You just have to give yourself permission to receive it. 🌿
