Kiaora. My name is ALANA. MY Sign Name is READING. I work for Deaf Aotearoa. Recently we had a workshop learning how to use this K-A-W-A-K-A-W-A
Which is used to make Maori medicine. See here. Our group had a great discussion and between us we developed and gave it a Sign Name. This is it. Why? Firstly this hand shape depicts the heart shaped leaf. See leaf here. As well as the heart shaped leaf it has two stems. See here These are a pair of fruiting stems. Thus the Sign Name KAWAKAWA.
Kawakawa heals bruises, hearts, and stubborn energies. 🌿💚

This year we had the privilege of holding a wānanga with members of the Deaf community, a space of connection, learning, and gentle grounding.
Together, we explored rongoā rakau, learning to identify our native plants through touch, sight, wairua, and story.
We shared simple self-mirimiri techniques to support the tinana, wairua, and the natural rhythms of everyday life.
What made this wānanga truly special was the way everyone showed up, open, curious, present.
Without spoken words, the wananga was full of mana, warmth, and deep understanding.
Healing has its own language.
Rongoā has its own voice.
And everyone felt it.

We look forward to creating more spaces that honour accessibility, connection, and the many ways we communicate and heal.
