If soap is made with lye… why doesn't a properly made bar contain the same lye you started with?

The answer is chemistry.

When sodium hydroxide—commonly called lye—is combined with oils in the correct proportions, a chemical reaction begins: saponification.

The lye doesn't simply hide inside the soap. And it doesn't just evaporate.

It reacts.

Sodium hydroxide reacts with the triglycerides in the oils, transforming the starting materials into soap molecules and glycerol.

Think of baking a cake. Once flour, eggs, and sugar have reacted through baking, you can't simply pull the original ingredients back out.

Soapmaking works on the same basic idea: the starting materials are chemically changed.

But here's the important part:

That doesn't mean any homemade soap is automatically safe.

The formula must contain the correct amount of lye for the oils being used, and the soap must be made properly.

That's why soapmakers calculate their recipes carefully.

Soapmaking isn't about removing the lye.

It's about understanding the chemistry that transforms it.

Have you ever wondered how a bowl of oil becomes a bar of soap?

Because it doesn't happen by simply mixing a few ingredients together.

You're watching a chemical reaction called saponification.

Oils and fats are made largely of molecules called triglycerides. When we carefully combine them with a strong alkali—such as sodium hydroxide for bar soap—the chemistry begins.

The alkali reacts with those triglycerides, breaking and rearranging their chemical bonds.

And here's the fascinating part:

You don't simply end up with oil mixed with lye.

You create new substances—soap molecules and glycerol, commonly called glycerin.

Each soap molecule has two personalities: one end is attracted to water, while the other is attracted to oils and grease.

That's what allows soap to surround oily dirt so water can carry it away.

So the next time you hold a handmade bar, remember:

You're holding chemistry in your hands.

Oil didn't simply become harder.

It became something new.

And that transformation?

That's saponification.
