Common Mistake: Skipping Your Retainer! π
You finally got your braces off, but your orthodontic journey isn't quite over yet!
Why is skipping your retainer such a big deal? The science is clear: teeth have a natural memory and a strong tendency to move back toward their original positions after treatmentβa process known as "orthodontic relapse." The periodontal ligaments and bone surrounding your roots need significant time to fully adapt and solidify around your new, perfect alignment.
Without the consistent, physical support of your retainer, those beautifully straight teeth can quickly start to shift. Wearing your retainer exactly as prescribed is the ultimate key to protecting your investment and preserving your healthy smile for a lifetime. β¨

Preventing Pulpal Inflammation
In cases other than accidental trauma to a tooth, there is a lot you can do to preserve your smile.
1. Follow a good oral care routine that includes cleaning between your teeth daily and twice daily brushing to protect teeth against cavities and clean teeth thoroughly. Proper oral care also helps preserves your existing fillings to protect your pulp.
2. Schedule regular visits with your dental professional, so any areas of decay can be identified while still small and far from pulp.
3. If you grind your teeth, consider wearing a mouthguard while you sleep to protect your teeth from cracks or breaks.
4. Reduce or eliminate sweets such as candy and sodas to keep safe from decay causing sugar.
Pulpitis can be painful. But simple treatment may keep your pulpitis as a reversible condition rather than irreversible one if caught early. With a good oral care routine and help from your dentist, you can get back enjoying a pain-free smile.

The visible cavity is often just the tip of the iceberg.
A cavity may look small on the surface, but the damage inside the tooth can be much more extensive. Tooth decay often spreads beneath the enamel before becoming obvious, which is why even tiny cavities should never be ignored. Early diagnosis helps preserve healthy tooth structure.

A bedtime bottle may seem comforting, but it can quietly damage a child's teeth while they sleep.
A recent Australian cohort study found that children who were bottle-fed to sleep beyond 12 months had a higher risk of developing early childhood tooth decay. Researchers also observed a higher likelihood of overweight among children who continued this bedtime feeding habit.
During sleep, saliva production naturally decreases, reducing the mouth's ability to wash away sugars and neutralize acids. When a bottle remains in the mouth as a child falls asleep, bacteria can feed on these sugars for prolonged periods, leading to repeated acid attacks on developing teeth.
This doesn't mean parents should stop meeting their child's nutritional needs. Instead, experts encourage gradually transitioning away from bedtime bottles after infancy, offering water instead of milk or sweetened drinks at bedtime when appropriate, and cleaning the child's teeth before sleep as soon as the first tooth erupts. Small changes in bedtime routines can help protect both oral and overall health during early childhood.

After braces come off, teeth naturally try to drift back to where they started. That's why retainers are so important for keeping your results. Skipping them might undo all that hard work. Did your teeth try to shift back? (CC: brain feed)
