Where did the word “bonfire” come from? 🔥

It sounds like it should mean a “good fire,” but its history is much stranger.

The word comes from Middle English bonefire—literally a fire made with bones. Over time, the spelling shifted to bonfire, and the original meaning faded.

So every time we say “bonfire,” we’re using a word with a much darker history than it sounds.

Follow for more strange English words, bizarre expressions, and unexpected word origins.

Why do we say “caught red-handed”? 🔴✋

This common English idiom has roots in old Scottish law. The term “red hand” described someone caught committing a crime or found with unmistakable evidence—sometimes literally with blood on their hands.

By the 1800s, “caught red-handed” had entered English usage. Today, it means catching someone in the act of doing something wrong.
