For new oilers, I wouldn’t begin with carbon atoms, molecular structures, or complicated chemistry. Start with “𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙄 𝙨𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙧 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙞𝙡?”

Think of an essential oil as a team made up of different natural compounds. These compounds help give an oil its aroma and characteristics. Three groups you’ll often hear about are 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀, and 𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗹𝘀.

🍋 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐒 — think 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗛 & 𝗨𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚

These are common in 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵-𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗶𝗹𝘀, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗶𝗹𝘀.

𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧, 𝙡𝙚𝙩’𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙮:

“When you smell that fresh, bright aroma from citrus oils, compounds called monoterpenes are often a big part of what you’re experiencing.”

Example: Limonene is abundant in many citrus peel oils.

𝙎𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙠𝙚𝙮𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙: 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗛

🌳 𝐒𝐄𝐒𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐒 — think 𝗗𝗘𝗘𝗣 & 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚

You’ll encounter these in several woody, spicy, and resinous oils. One well-known example is beta-caryophyllene, which is especially abundant in copaiba.

𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧, 𝙡𝙚𝙩’𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙮:

“Sesquiterpenes are larger aromatic compounds. They often show up in oils we describe as 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽, 𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘆, 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺, 𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.”

𝙎𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙠𝙚𝙮𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙: 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚

🌿 𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐍𝐎𝐋𝐒 — think 𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧

Phenols include compounds such as thymol, carvacrol, and eugenol, found in oils like Thyme, Oregano, and Clove.

“Phenol-rich oils can be very potent. That’s also why we need to be more mindful about proper use and dilution, because some can irritate the skin.”
