Art meets literature: because Wild Metaphysics is permeated by literature, drawing from magical realism and fantastic fiction, we’re asking the artists and the curator of the exhibition to reveal one book they always recommend to friends.
THIAGO BARBALHO, artist
Pick: ‘The Falling Sky. Words of a Yanomami Shaman’ by Davi Kopenawa, Bruce Albert
“This book directs the foundations of philosophy and writing toward a transformative and reparative path. The Indigenous Yanomami cosmology is recounted here in the voice of their people’s own shaman, who also tells of his journey in contact with non-Indigenous society (the ‘people of merchandise’) and its violent stupidities. It is a transcription of Davi Kopenawa’s oral accounts, for whom the very notion of a book holds no interest except as a colossal diplomatic effort to be heard by the West.” — Thiago Barbalho
🗓 Wild Metaphysics is on view through October 24.

In the spotlight: Gaep’s cofounder Andrei Breahnă sat down with Filtru Cultural București to talk about cultural entrepreneurship, tastemaking, the gallery’s activity over the past 12 years, and its current location, seen in the historical context of Floreasca.
📍This Saturday, October 3, 11:00 am, a guided tour of the Floreasca neighborhood organized by Filtru Cultural will start at Gaep, with a walkthrough of the exhibition Wild Metaphysics.

How the exhibition Wild Metaphysics came into being: from Andrei Breahnă’s research trip to São Paulo and Sylvia Monasterios’s curatorial process of bringing together six Brazilian artists whose works explore the boundary between reality and imagination, to the site-specific wall drawing that Thiago Barbalho made after reading Mircea Cărtărescu’s Solenoid and the digital images that inspire Marina Woisky to create tactile objects.
For RFI Romania, Mihaela Dedeoglu walked through the exhibition together with Gaep’s cofounder, the curator and two of the artists to uncover the stories behind it.

Making our debut at The Armory Show today with a spotlight on Razvan Anton. The artist’s new body of work is based on his long-term engagement with archival images and a distinctive heliographic process that situates his practice at the intersection of drawing and photography.

Roberta Curcă’s work Menstrual Pavement (2015) is part of the exhibition Images of History, Histories of Images, now on view at MARe/Muzeul de Artă Recentă, in Bucharest.
Curated by Ruxandra Demetrescu, the exhibition traces one hundred years of Romanian art – from the historical avant-garde and post-War experiments in abstraction to contemporary painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and video. “History alters images, but images also alter the way we can see history. The trajectory of the exhibition lies between these two movements.” – excerpt from the curatorial text
