🐰Why Is Breed Knowledge Important for Veterinarians?

🔹Although all domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) belong to the same species, different breeds have unique anatomical and genetic characteristics that influence disease risk, clinical examination, and medical management.

🔹Knowledge of breed predispositions helps veterinarians recognize common disorders earlier, select appropriate diagnostic tests, and provide breed-specific preventive recommendations. Body size also affects drug dosing, anesthetic protocols, nutritional management, and housing advice.

🐯International Tiger Day is celebrated every year on 29 July to raise awareness about tiger conservation and the urgent need to protect this iconic species. The day was established in 2010 during the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit, where representatives from 13 tiger range countries agreed to work together to double the global wild tiger population by 2022 through the TX2 conservation initiative.

Tigers are among the world's most recognizable predators, but they remain endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade. Today, fewer than 6,000 wild tigers remain, making continued conservation efforts essential. Protecting tigers also helps preserve entire ecosystems, as they are apex predators that maintain the balance of nature.

🐍 Large Extra-Organ Esophageal Abscess in a California Kingsnake (Lampropeltis californiae)

A California kingsnake (Lampropeltis californiae) presented with a firm swelling in the cranial third of the body. Despite the lesion, the snake remained clinically stable with a normal appetite, activity, and defecation, and no regurgitation.

🔹Ultrasound revealed a ~5 cm mobile hyperechoic mass in the esophageal region. Differential diagnoses included esophageal neoplasia and extra-organ abscess.
🔹Gastroscopy showed an intact esophageal mucosa
🔹Celiotomy identified a large extra-organ abscess tightly adhered to the vena cava. The abscess capsule was completely excised intact, followed by defect closure.
🔹Bacterial culture identified Salmonella enterica and Staphylococcus aureus. The empirical antibiotic protocol matched the susceptibility profile, resulting in an uncomplicated recovery.

✅ Clinical takeaway for veterinarians: Reptiles may remain clinically stable despite extensive pathology. When treating reptile abscesses, complete capsule excision combined with bacteriological culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing is essential for successful management and minimizing recurrence.

📌Why should veterinarians know the difference?

Understanding the differences between medetomidine and dexmedetomidine is essential for safe anesthetic planning in dogs, cats, horses, exotic mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Selecting the appropriate α₂-agonist helps veterinarians optimize sedation and analgesia, calculate accurate drug dosages, anticipate cardiovascular effects, and choose the most appropriate reversal protocol.

Knowledge of each drug's pharmacology also contributes to better patient safety, smoother recoveries, and more individualized anesthetic management.

❌Destruction or osteolysis of the tympanic bulla indicates advanced otitis media or otitis interna and significantly increases the risk of complications during bulla flushing.

Irrigation may force infectious material through areas of bone loss into surrounding soft tissues or, in severe cases, toward the cranial cavity, potentially worsening the infection.

❓How to identify bulla destruction? Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for evaluating the tympanic bulla.

✅What to do instead. Obtain samples for bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing whenever possible. Initiate targeted systemic antimicrobial therapy based on culture results. Consider surgical management, such as ventral bulla osteotomy or total ear canal ablation with bulla osteotomy, rather than bulla flushing alone.

In rabbits and other species with chronic otitis media, CT evaluation of the tympanic bulla should be performed before considering bulla flushing, as the presence of bulla destruction may fundamentally change the treatment plan.

🐭Husbandry Conditions and Welfare State of Pet Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) and Caretakers’ Perceptions of Stress and Emotional Closeness to Their Animals

This study explored husbandry practices, welfare, and the human–chinchilla relationship in pet chinchillas. While most owners met their pets' basic needs, common welfare concerns included solitary housing, undersized enclosures, and illness. Chinchillas with strong human bonds and good husbandry showed fewer signs of stress, highlighting the importance of proper care and positive human–animal interactions.
