Athletes train hard to excel. Recovery, the thing that actually determines how they feel the next day, can sometimes be a struggle for them.

Paulos Abraham, a professional footballer for Hammarby IF, has struggled with sleep after most games. "Most of the teammates in the different clubs I've represented have a similar experience," he says.

More air in equals more oxygen in your body, right? Think again.

Your muscles need oxygen and nutrients to produce energy. To get that oxygen where it's needed during exercise, your working muscles produce CO₂ and heat, creating a slightly acidic environment around them.
This process is known as the Bohr effect.

Hemoglobin passes through that acidic, CO₂-rich, warm tissue. It softens its grip on oxygen, releasing it exactly where your muscles need it. Then it picks up the CO₂ and carries it back to your lungs.

When you overbreathe, fast and shallow through your mouth, you exhale too much CO₂. Less CO₂ means a weaker Bohr effect. Less oxygen reaches your muscles, even while you're breathing in more air.

Low, slow, rhythmic breathing through your nose does the opposite. It preserves the CO₂ your body needs to release oxygen efficiently. More fuel, less effort.

Your breathing isn't a passive backdrop to your performance. It's the engine deciding how far your muscles can go.
