Is it necessary to legally marry your spouse?

A 67-year-old man said he has been unable to claim the body of his longtime partner after her death because they were never legally married, despite having lived together for more than 30 years.

According to Shin Min Daily News, police issued an appeal on April 29 to trace the relatives of an unidentified woman believed to be in her 60s who had been living at Block 556 Bedok North Street 3. She was said to have died on April 15 and was believed to be known as Tan Ah May.

The man, surnamed Low, told the paper that he and the 68-year-old woman had been together for more than three decades and had always called her Ah May. He said they were chatting until about 2am on the day she died, and he only realised something was wrong when she did not wake up as usual later that morning.

He said she was born in Indonesia and had no relatives in Singapore. Because they never registered their marriage, he is not allowed to personally claim her body or handle her funeral arrangements. He told the paper he hopes her body can be released soon so she can be given a proper send-off.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that it was alerted to an incident that day and conveyed one person to Changi General Hospital. Police have asked anyone with information on Tan Ah May’s relatives to come forward.

“I will not give up as long as she’s still breathing”
Now a father of two, Ahmad is appealing to the public for help, not just financially, but also for information on any other possible assistance channels.

I won’t give up as long as Aifat is still breathing,” he said.

Ahmad has also turned to social media to seek help, sharing his story online in hopes that someone may be able to offer assistance or point him towards other avenues of support. Fb/ Hamada Azman
