PREPARING TRAINERS TO DELIVER PROJECT SUARA

Good programmes require more than well-designed activities.

They also require trainers who understand the purpose behind each activity, can anticipate how learners may respond and are prepared to adapt while preserving the programme’s objectives.

On 19 September 2026, By Definition Pte Ltd conducted a four-hour Train-the-Trainers session for the Project SUARA Community Trainers at the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SMCCI) office.

As the project implementation partner of Pentas Foundation Ltd, our role is to translate Project SUARA’s objectives into structured learning experiences and equip the Community Trainers to deliver them effectively.

During the session, the trainers experienced and familiarised themselves with activities across the project’s three learning tracks:

📰 Wartawan
🎭 Drama

Experiencing the activities as participants allowed the trainers to understand the intended learning journey, practise the facilitation process and consider how they could support children and youths with different personalities, confidence levels and learning needs.

Programme Mentor Hidayah Juhari was present to guide and assist the participants.

Musa from Parallax Atelier documented the session while also contributing insights from his experience within the education industry.

We were also joined by a special eight-year-old volunteer, Noah, who offered our trainers something especially valuable: the perspective of a young learner.

His responses helped them consider whether instructions were clear, whether the activities were engaging and what trainers could expect when working with younger children.

It was an important reminder that quality programme development must include the voices and experiences of the people for whom the programme is intended.

At By Definition, trainer preparation is not treated as an administrative step before deployment.

It is part of the programme itself.

When trainers understand the learning objectives, experience the activities and are given space to practise and ask questions, they are better equipped to create safe, engaging and meaningful experiences for participants.

Another important milestone for By Definition®.

We are pleased to share that the design behind our Wayang Kulit Instant Envelope/Toy Kit is now officially registered with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).

Registered Design No. 30202600144Y protects the shape and configuration of the Envelope/Toy Kit design.

For us, however, this milestone represents more than the registration of a product design.

Wayang Kulit Instant! began with a simple question:

How can we make it easier for students to encounter, understand and experience traditional arts and heritage through learning?

That question led us to rethink how a Wayang Kulit learning experience could be packaged — bringing together educational content, hands-on construction, play and performance in an accessible format for students.

As By Definition continues to develop original programmes, products and learning experiences around Malay arts, culture and heritage, protecting the intellectual property created through that work is an important part of building sustainably for the future.

It allows us to continue doing what we have always set out to do:

Innovate. Educate. Inspire.

And to find new ways of bringing our heritage from one generation to the next.

KEM DRAMA – PENTASKAN! AT MAYFLOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL

By Definition has completed another run of Kem Drama – Pentaskan!, conducted over two days on 19 and 26 August for students from Mayflower Secondary School.

Across six hours, the students participated in a structured drama-learning journey designed to meet the programme objectives while making the experience engaging and enjoyable.

Following the first session, the teacher shared:

“Saya s**a dengan susunan aktiviti sesi hari ni. Teratur dan menepati objektif. Para pelajar pun nampak seronok. 😃”

We were especially encouraged to know that the programme was well-organised, aligned with its objectives and positively received by the students.

After the second and final session, the teacher shared:

“Alhamdulillah saya berpuas hati dengan kualiti program yang pihak Encik Abdillah sediakan. InshaAllah saya akan ambil lagi tahun-tahun akan datang.”

We are grateful for the school’s confidence in the quality of our programme and deeply encouraged by the possibility of returning in the coming years.

LEARNING STEM THROUGH MALAY LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Alhamdulillah, By Definition has completed our Malay Language and STEM programme series for Primary 1 to Primary 5 students.

Across the five levels, students encountered STEM through familiar cultural experiences:

🎯 Primary 1
Tapak Gajah, Lumba Karung and Tarik Upih introduced balance, force, friction and movement.

🪀 Primary 2
Gasing and Capteh helped students explore rotation, stability, gravity and trajectory.

🎭 Primary 3
Wayang Kulit Instant connected puppet construction and theatre with light, shadow, joints and movement.

🪁 Primary 4
Wau Instant! introduced symmetry, measurement, structure, material strength and basic aerodynamics.

🌿 Primary 5
Dapur Sebagai Farmasi introduced students to herbs, plant knowledge, food literacy and the importance of these ingredients within Malay dishes and cultural practices.

Throughout the series, the Malay Language became a tool for students to observe, identify, construct, test, perform and explain what they experienced.

We were encouraged by the positive teacher feedback received across the programmes. Our facilitators were recognised for their professionalism, the programme flow was described as smooth, and students especially enjoyed the hands-on and performance components.

Following the final Wau Instant! and Dapur Sebagai Farmasi sessions, the teacher shared:

“Alhamdulillah, everything was good.”

We thank the school, teachers, facilitators, coordinators and students for making this learning journey possible.

HOW WAYANG KULIT INSTANT BEGAN

Wayang Kulit Instant was developed by By Definition in response to an educational need we observed in schools.

Students were often introduced to wayang kulit through presentations and demonstrations. We wanted to create an accessible, child-friendly experience that would allow them to participate more actively in the cultural form.

This led us to develop a puppet kit that students could construct, manipulate and eventually use in their own performances.

Wayang Kulit Instant was officially launched in 2018. Since then, more than 1,000 pieces have been sold and used in educational settings.

The learning does not end when the puppet is assembled.

Through the experience, students can explore:

• Malay arts, culture and heritage
• Character design and visual expression
• Light and shadow
• Joints, movement and simple mechanisms
• Language and storytelling
• Communication and collaboration
• Performance and creative confidence

During a recent Primary 3 programme, students constructed their puppets before bringing them to life through a theatre activity.

Their teacher shared:

“The flow was good. The children enjoyed the experience, especially the theatre component.”

She also suggested that the experience could be adapted for staff team-building.

For us, this feedback reflects the purpose behind Wayang Kulit Instant.

Students should not only be told about culture. They should be given opportunities to touch it, construct it, explore it and participate in carrying it forward.

We recently wrapped up our 'Public Speaking for Success' workshops, executing across 14 different sites all at once. Managing a multi-site project of this scale is always a masterclass in logistics—but more importantly, it’s an exercise in trust.

​To deliver high-impact sessions without burning out the team, we blended years of on-the-ground school programming experience with agile, digital workflows.

​1️⃣ Clarity is the ultimate support:
We replaced exhausting live briefings with dedicated video training modules. Trainers could internalize the curriculum and master physical skillsets at their own pace. By sharing these exact resources with the organizers, everyone operated from a single source of truth.

​2️⃣ Leaders clear the path, they don’t micromanage:
With 14 live venues, control is an illusion. We set up a Central Command Structure designed purely to absorb friction. When on-ground issues popped up, they channeled them to us to mitigate instantly with organizers. This kept our trainers 100% focused on the humans in front of them.

​3️⃣ Trust the system so the team can shine:
Despite launching over a long holiday weekend (when students are naturally in a "holiday mood"), the framework held beautifully. Quiet students found the confidence to speak on stage, and relief coaches stepped in seamlessly to drive high-energy breakout circles.
