Is Democracy working in Africa. Most of the young people who came into this room, came with the idea that Democracy is a western concept and it is not working in Africa. The first thing we learnt was that Democracy is in fact not a western idea and is a set of ideas that come from different cultures including Africa.
Ancient African societies have been practicing inclusive forms of government way before the colonizers came to Africa.
What also came out of this conversation is that if implemented right, Democracy is most likely to work but unfortunately, it is the people who are supposed to implement Democracy in Africa that have found ways to manipulate the system in their favor and that's why it looks like it is not working in Africa.
Different ideas where shared, examples and experiences of how and where Democracy has and is working in Africa where shared and most of us came out of the room with the knowledge that Democracy can only work if individuals such as ourselves practiced Democracy by getting involved at whatever level we are; holding our leaders accountable by following up and not just waiting for elections to get swayed but the smoothest talker.
