Does a heart truly break?

It ought to be soft, after all.

Breaking is in the nature of the hard;
the soft heart does not shatter
it tightens, it bruises, it is pressed inward.

If it breaks at a single no,
at what you did not want,
what did not become,
at words spoken or silences kept,

then that heart was glass to you,
and you were never meant to dwell there.

May your path cross the soft-hearted,
the ones who do not break against you.

It was the first year I didn’t quit my take-apart puzzle,
not leaving it unfinished,
but knowing I would rebuild it by choice…

An old game…

A year when I tried to create something new
from pieces I knew were mixed up and incomplete,
yet gathered carefully into a single box…

A year of watering the very last seeds
I planted in brand-new soil,
thanking the sun that touched them,
waiting every day for the sapling to grow…

A year when I told my daughter,
“Snow will fall there,”
and though the sky didn’t keep its promise,
we still rejoiced in the white of frost-covered grass
it gifted us on cold mornings…

A year I learned that standing tall
can also become a hunch…

A year I promised I would never let go of my daughter’s hand,
and when my reach fell short,
I tried to become her fortress instead…

A year I spoke less to hear more;
a year I learned that the best teacher of long retreats was myself,
and that the center of it all was my heart
a year that will never turn into a polished recap reel…

How could the gratitude of a child’s scent,
the wisdom of a tree,
ever fit into a video…

May the coming year be one
where we place our hope not in years, ages, or stars,
but in ourselves…

For some, may it be MAKE–BREAK;
for others, BREAK–MAKE…
