What is Anagen Effluvium ?

Anagen effluvium refers to the sudden onset loss of hairs in the growing phase( anagen) , as a result of chemotherapy, radiation, toxins, and chemicals and inflammatory diseases, which disturb the mitotic ( rate of cell division) of the hair follicle.

As a result of the arrest of cell division, the hair shaft becomes narrow and weak which is easily fractured on trivial trauma .

Under rare circumstances, there can be complete failure of hair bulb formation . Normally more than 90% 0f hairs are in the growing phase , therefore the hairloss appears to be severe because all of a sudden, most of the scalp becomes bald .

In contrast to Telogen Effluvium or hair shedding that arises during the telogen or resting stage of the hair cycle .

Anagen Effluvium usually resolves on its own , but has a lag period of 2-3 months before the hair starts growing . Hair density/ texture may not be the same .

CAUSES OF ANAGEN EFFLUVIUM.

Chemotherapy induced - sorafenib, sanitizing, pazopanib ,dasatinib , methotrexate, cetuximab etc

Systemic - systemic lupus erythematosus and secondary syphilis .

Endocrinopathies - hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, hypopituitarism and diabetes mellitus .

Toxic agents - bismuth , mercury , boron , thallium, copper, and cadmium .

Nonchemotherapeutic drugs - levodopa, colchicine, cyclosporine. Strontium ranelate, pegylated interferon alfa-2a and ribavirin .

Knowing the causes of your hair and scalp concerns is important to seek the assistance of a certified professional ( Hairloss specialist, trichologist, dermatologist) should be your main priority.

Understanding the difference changes the outcome .
Hair and scalp issues don't just happen.

There's always a reason, as a certified hair and scalp care specialist i just dont look at your hair i look at your scalp , patterns and what's happening internally.

The video shows a cross section of my client scalp during scalp analysis.

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory scalp condition often marked by flaking, itching , redness and greasy or waxy scales . While it may seem like the scales are just flakes leaving them untreated can create an environment that worsens the condition and hinder the health of your hair and scalp .

Why consistency with scalp care is important.

Regular cleansing helps remove scales and excess oils .
Targeted treatments reduce inflammation and balance the scales.

Self diagnosing is never the answer, proper evaluation is important especially if your noticing changes with your scalp and hair .

I'm a usti certified hairloss specialist with accreditation from American Medical Certification Association, with over 17+ years as a multi textured hairstylist.
