Valentine's Day Nail Designs

It is hard to think of a more romantic time of the year than February because of St. Valentine's Day! It’s is a great time for you to show off your love of romance and get your hands into great shape for the date that you will surely be going on.
A manicure is about more than just looking good, it is a way to treat yourself to some “me” time and find a way to express yourself. There are so many options when it comes to getting a perfect nail design for this romantic day, and don't worry about trying something new out. You might just love it, and you are sure to turn some heads too!

A Day For You

If you never treat yourself, make this holiday the first time you do. Most women feel a little bit guilty about splurging on themselves and a manicure is a great way to spoil yourself and show everyone how much you value your appearance. There are so many options that are available to you in a John's Beauty Parlour, and if this is your first time don't worry about having some over the top art pushed on you.
A good start is getting your fingers cleaned up and having a high quality polish that you love to put on. Your manicurist is a professional, and he / she will do a great job on your hands. It doesn't seem like much if you have never done it before, but getting a manicure can make a big difference in how you feel about yourself.
You might be really surprised with how much you like to have professionally manicured hands, and you will always remember that it was Valentine’s Day when you decided to start making an investment in you.

Valentine's Day Nail Art

Let’s face it, we are all sort of drawn to having some outrageous nail art. The colors that you can get away with around Valentine's Day are a real treat too, and if you are normally skittish about wearing bright red this is your chance to have a blast.
There are a lot of options for you to choose from, and you might have a hard time knowing where to begin. Think about having some bright and glittery colors. They are so brilliant to see, and hearts are all the rage this time of the year.
Don't think that you have to cover all of your nails in glittery pink and gold, there are many designs that rely on the judicious use eye-catching elements to really make a big splash. You can just have a few little accents applied to your festive nails, and it is sure to be a great look.
For those of you who aren't so bashful about manicure, this holiday is a great time to pull out all of the stops and let loose. Reds and pinks are really hot, and you can let your manicurist apply the deep gloss and jewels liberally. Using abstract forms can make your fingers really beautiful and if you want, reds really lend themselves to being used for two-tone design cues.

Bring On The Sparkles!

If you are going to stick with the traditional romantic palette of bright, warm colors you have a great opportunity to let the gold and silver sparkle. Using shiny metal flake can add a lot of heat and flash to your nail art, and they really do go well with bright, vibrant colors.
This is a great time of the year to have a whole surface dripping with bling, and you don't have to be shy about showing them off. Using a design that revolves around golden colors, and then complements that with accents of red and pink can look great.
If you feel more comfortable using sparkly metal as the accent, red is a great paint to do that with. You can ask your manicurist to give your nails a little bit of flash near the cuticle, and let the design explode at the tip in brilliant crimson.
Bright pink and some of its lighter shades really do go splendidly with silver flake. If you want a more subtle way to shine for February 14th incorporate the use of delicate silver flakes into your high-key nail design.
For a simply virginal look, the combination of light pastel pinks, with shimmery whites and silver will make you wonder why you don't wear it all year long. A good manicurist can blend these subtle, high-key elements into something that is classy and playful while still maintaining the spirit of the season.

Winter Ice

Nail art offers you a chance to give your boyfriend a not-so-subtle hint about where you want the relationship to go. The romantic palette is also a great mix with gems, and a brilliant red paint looks like fire with a few sparkles on it.
One of the nicest combinations is to mix is a little bit of silver flake with some small gems against a background of glossy pastel pink. If you want to spurge try out some abstract designs on top of the base paint. All of that bling will give you a captivating effect.
There are so many choices when it comes to using gems and you can really do a lot to make your fingers flash with just a few well-placed gems. Of course if you are really trying to make it obvious for him, get a nice big rock right on your ring finger nail. He is sure to get that message loud and clear.

Make It An Outing!

A Valentine's Day manicure is a great way to get some girl time. Talk to a friend about going with you, and have lunch afterwards. You will have tons of time to talk, and after your manicures you can take a look at the handiwork that you will both be wearing for the big day.
Above all having a great manicure is about loving yourself and showing the world what you adore. If you have never gotten a manicure before, go, you will never regret it. For those of you who love nail design, Valentine's Day is a great time to splurge and try out some new styles that you have been waiting to show off. You will love the way your hands look.

REMOVING GEL NAILS
FILE OFF THE TOP LAYER. To remove your gel nails, you first need to file off the top layer of the gel. This will take away the shine. Only once the shine is removed can you move forward in removing the gel.

• 2
COVER COTTON BALLS IN 100% ACCETON. The gel won’t come off if you don’t use 100% acetone. Take 10 pieces of cotton balls and soak them in your acetone. The cotton balls should be big enough to cover your whole nail.

• 3
WRAP TIN FOIL AROUND YOUR FINGERTIPS. Take one of you cotton balls and place it on your nail, covering your entire nail. With the cotton ball in place, wrap the nail and the tip of your finger with tin foil. Do this over the rest of your nails.
• It is recommended to do this one hand at a time. It is very difficult to use foil-covered fingers to wrap the second hand.

• 4
LET SIT AND THEN REMOVE ONE AT A TIME. Let the foil stay wrapped for 15 minutes. Don’t try pulling it open to check if it’s working—keep it shut. After 15 minutes, remove the wrapping one nail at a time. The gel will have started to peel back. Use a cuticle stick to push the gel off your nail.

• If there is gel stuck that you can’t remove with the cuticle stick, re-wrap your nails with another acetone soaked cotton ball and foil. Let sit for another 15 minutes and try again.

5. 5
FINNISH WITH CUTICLE OIL. Once again, you want to finish with cuticle oil. Massage cuticle oil into the skin around the base of your nail.

o If your nails look rough, apply cuticle oil to the surface of your nail and buff them using a nail buffer.

How to Apply Gel Nails
Applying gel nails gives you the strength of acrylic nails with the appearance of natural nails. When applying gel nails, you don’t get the strong fumes that you get when acrylics are applied. The gel hardens under UV light. Each layer has to harden under this light for two to three minutes. This creates a chemical bond that connects the gel to your nail.

Prepping Your Nails

1
File and shape your nails. To get the ultimate look from your at-home gel nails, start with the ultimate blank nail. Take the time to cut, file, and shape your nails. Before you cut them, decide what shape you want. Cut the basic shape and then file the tips. Finally, finish shaping by rounding the surface of your nails with a buffer.
o You can create round, square, pointy, almond, or oval nails.
o Because gel nails are based off of your nails, this is when you shape your nails. It is not like applying acrylic nails that can be shaped during/after application.

• 2
Use cuticle remover. Once you have the basic shape to your nail, apply a cuticle remover around the base of your nails. Use a cuticle stick to push back any skin off of your nail plate. Remove any remaining oil or debris from your nail with a cotton ball that’s been dipped in acetone.

3. 3
Apply your base layer. Apply a very thin layer of your basecoat to your nails. For gel, you use a much thinner layer than you would with standard nail polish. Be careful when applying your base layer: you don’t want to get the gel on your fingers. Let your base layer dry for twice as long as recommended.

APPLYING THE COLOR

• 3
Apply 2 thin layers. Once your base layer has dried completely, apply another extremely thin layer. This will be your color gel. It will probably look streaky, but that is normal for the first layer. Make sure to use these colored layers to paint over the tip of your nail as well as over the surface. This will keep the gel from curling back off your nail.
• Cure each layer under a UV lamp for 2-3 minutes.

• 4
Apply your top gel. Coat your nails completely in your top gel. Paint over the tip, like you did with your color gel. Once again, cure the gel polish under a UV light for 2-3 minutes.

5. 3
Remove the tacky. Some gel methods leave a tacky, sticky layer on and around your nails after curing the top gel. If this is the case, simply take a cotton ball dipped in isopropyl alcohol and wipe over the tacky. Finish off your gel manicure by rubbing a cuticle oil into the skin around the base of your nail.
Thank you for time, be creative.

How To Turn Your Weak, Into a Stronger Ones?

Say goodbye to weak and brittle nails with these easy techniques that anyone can nail.

KEEP THEM OUT OF WATER

When it comes to strengthening fingernails, to “avoid excessive water exposure, as it can soften your nails.” With overhydration, our nail beds expand as water is absorbed, then contract as the moisture evaporates, leaving them noticeably flimsy and prone to peeling. To keep your nails from getting soft, always wear rubber gloves when you wash dishes, and minimize time spent in hot showers and swimming pools.

FILE RIGHT

How you file your nails can make or break them—literally. You’ll want to cut your nails with clippers first, then shape them with a fine-grit cushion file rather than a metal file, which is rougher on the skin around your nails. “I personally prefer the file grade #180, a medium grit file that’s strong enough to get the job done, but soft enough to leave the nail smooth and the surrounding skin unharmed, “And filing in one direction is always the key to healthy nails,” as sawing back and forth with the file can weaken the nail’s edges and set you up for rips, tears, and peeling.

TAKE BIOTIN SUPPLEMENTS

Biotin, a water-soluble vitamin, is the only supplement scientifically proven to strengthen nails, according to Dr. Jaber. In one study, researchers tested the effects of biotin on women with brittle nails, and found a 25 percent increase in nail thickness, reduced splitting of the nails, and normalizing of overall brittle nails after six to nine months. Sometimes the best nail supplements are actually touted for hair. “Hair and nails have a lot in common, and supplements designed to treat one oftentimes result in improvements in the other,” says Whitney Bowe, MD, a board certified dermatologist in NYC.

KEEP THEM CHEMICAL-FREE

Warning: You’re not going to like what you’re about to read. Many of your favorite nail polishes, acrylics, and nail polish removers are full of harsh chemicals that cause nail brittleness, dryness, and thinning. If you want to make your nails stronger, it’s wise to avoid gel polishes, acrylic nail glue, acetone soaks, and acetone nail polish remover at all costs. “Avoid chemical irritants, as your nails can be damaged from chemical exposures,” If you can’t resist having your nails painted, stick to nontoxic nail polish, like from Zoya, Jin Soon Choi, and LONDONTOWN (which is actually vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free), and acetone-free removers that won’t strip your nails and skin of their natural oils.

PAMPER YOUR CUTICLES

Though your manicurist may say otherwise, there is actually no medical reason to cut your cuticles, according to webmd.com. In fact, your cuticles are part of your skin and serve the important purpose of acting as your nail’s protective barrier. Further, cutting your cuticles may lead to infection, ridges, white lines, and other nail problems. If you don’t like the look of your cuticles, have the manicurist gently push them back with a wooden stick instead of trimming them with clippers. To keep them healthy, make sure to always moisturize your cuticles with a nourishing oil like the Omega Labs Cuticle Oil or LONDONTOWN Kur Nourishing Cuticle Oil

GIVE THE POLISH A REST

Many of us are guilty of trying to making our nail polish last as long as possible. We hope to extend the life of our color with constant touch-ups, then when the chips become too noticeable to bear, we head straight to a salon for a fresh coat. This all makes sense for cosmetic purposes, but having nail polish on your nails for too long greatly damages their strength and overall health. Even the safest nail polishes can leave your nails brittle, thin, and dry if left on for too long. Instead, fully remove your nail polish after five days and allow them the same amount of time to recover before getting them re-painted.

STICK TO A HEALTHY DIET

One of the keys to having strong nails is maintaining a healthy diet. Foods like blueberries that are full of antioxidants help protect your body’s cells from free radical damage, while leafy greens provide the iron you need for nail strength. Magnesium-rich almonds are great for smoothing your nails’ vertical ridges, and the calcium in dairy is an important mineral for helping them grow. Incorporate fish oil, vitamin D, and plenty of coconut oil into your diet as well for optimum nail health

DO AT HOME NAIL TREATMENT

If your nails look like they need some major TLC, do an at-home nail treatment. In the same way your face occasionally needs a super hydrating face mask, so do your nails. Consider dermatologist Dana Stern’s Deep Hydrating Formula, a hybrid gel-oil that hydrates and strengthens nails or Dermelect’s Peptide Infused Nail Recovery System for Damaged or Aging Nails. You can also try homemade remedies: For yellow nails, a great DIY nail treatment involves exfoliating with lemon juice and baking soda. If your nails are extremely dry, dip your fingertips in olive oil.
Always cut your nails

As much as you might love the look of long, beautifully-shaped fingernails, it’s best to avoid growing them out if you want to make them stronger. “Keep your nails shorter, as the longer they are, the easier it is for them to get traumatized,” says Dr. Jaber. Short nails are far less likely to be broken in your everyday life. As an added bonus, it’s also much easier to maintain the appearance of nails when they’re short! But not too short—here’s how bad it is to bite them!

VISIT YOUR PEDICURIST

If your nails remain brittle no matter how hard you work to repair and strengthen them, it may be time to visit an expert. “If these methods are not effective then see your dermatologist, as there are prescription nail lacquers like Genadur or Nuvail which can sometimes strengthen your nails,

HOW TO PEDICURE AT HOME (part 2)
7. Base coat

Apply a base coat to protect the nails from colour staining and to provide the nail varnish with an even surface to adhere to, preventing any streaking. If you have a specific nail concern such as weak or brittle nails, choose a base coat that also treats the nail.

8. Polish

Take your chosen colour of nail varnish and apply in slow, even brush strokes. A thin layer is all you need, as a second coat will be applied. When the first coat is touch-dry (this should take about 10 minutes), apply your second coat using the same technique. Sit back and relax for 20 minutes while your nails dry.

9. Top coat

When your polish is dry, apply a protective top coat for a longer-lasting, chip-resistant pedicure. Finish with a quick dry spray or drops, leave nails for 5 minutes and then remove the toe separators.

10. Clean up

Use an old, clean lip brush, dip it into nail varnish remover and go around the edge of each nail to neaten.

How to Pedicure At Home (part 1)
Ever wondered how to achieve the perfect salon-worthy DIY pedicure? Well look no further… below is an ultimate guide to doing your pedicure at home, including everything from preparation and foot care to base coats and top coats.

Preparation

A pedicure is only as good as the base it’s on so preparation is a must!

1. Exfoliate

Begin by exfoliating the feet to remove any build up of dead skin cells. Invest in an express pedicure gadget for a super easy and quick result; it’s essentially an electronic foot file. Simply glide the micro-abrasive roller over the areas of hard skin to buff it away and within seconds, you’ll have smooth feet. Alternatively, use a foot scrub containing refreshing ingredients such as peppermint and massage it into feet, focusing on the dry areas, leave for 5-10 minutes and then wash off in the shower.

2. Moisturise

For super smooth feet, apply foot cream after exfoliating. For an intensive moisture kick, massage into feet before bed, put cotton socks on over the top and leave overnight

3. File and buff

For all-in-one nail care, use an electronic nail file that comes with three different heads: one for filing, one for buffing and one for polishing nails. Begin by filing the nails to achieve the shape you want. Hold the file parallel to the side of the toenail; avoid pushing it right into the corner of the nail as this can cause breakage. File from the outside to the centre of the nail and repeat from the other side. Don’t go back and fourth as you risk tearing and peeling the nail. Switch to the correct head to buff the nail surface, removing any ridges. Finally, use the polishing head on the nail’s surface for a healthy and shiny finish. Alternatively, opt for a buffer block that also includes the different surfaces for filing, buffing and polishing

4. Ingrown toenails

If you notice the corners of your toenail are growing into the skin surrounding them, this is likely to be an ingrown toenail developing. The causes vary but when it comes to nail care, filing your toenails in the right way can help to prevent it from happening. Always hold the file parallel to the side of the nail – if you edge the file too far into the corner, you risk breakage and any remaining sharp edges of nail could pierce the skin and embed itself in it. Or, if you file the corners of your toenails to short, it may encourage the skin to fold over the nail, leaving the nail with only one direction to grow: into the skin.

5. Cuticle care

After filing, gently massage nail oil into the cuticles and toenails and leave for 5-10 minutes. This will moisturise and condition the nails, as well as softening the cuticles, making them easier to work with. Next, use a cuticle stick to push the cuticles back to the base of the nails and then take a cuticle nipper or gentle nail scissors to trim any excess cuticle.

6. Toe separators

Pop some toe separators on to prevent toes from touching one another, minimising any smudging.
