I made a great natural sunscreen a few weeks ago and wanted to try it out a bit before giving you the recipe. We love it! I also use it on our youngest dog who gets sunburned easily in this hot desert sun of Arizona and it works great on her as well. All natural ingredients so no harmful things to ingest! Very easy!
3/4 c. Coconut Oil
2 Tbsp. Shea Butter
1 Tbsp. Raspberry Seed Oil (or Pomegranite Oil)
2 Tbsp. Zinc Oxide (powder)
10 drops Lavender EO
Melt first three ingredients together, then whisk in the Zinc Oxide and Lavender EO. At this point, I put the mixture in the refrigerator to cool and solidify so that I could whip it with my electric mixer to make it fluffy. (You could probably omit this). I put this into a glass jar and stored in the refrigerator because of the high heat here in the desert where I live. Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees so if you live in a warm climate, you may want to pour into a "bottle" to keep at room temperature. It is creamy and really good for your skin. The zinc oxide keeps you from getting burned. It has a natural SPF of about 30+.
I like to switch up the ingredients in my skin balms and creams. Coconut Oil is a great addition to products because of the unique medium chain fatty acids which have anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. They also serve as antioxidants which protect your skin. So coconut oil is essentially food for your skin! One of the things that I love about Coconut Oil is that it is "whippable" - when you beat it with a mixer, it whips up light and airy and makes a terrific base for other oils. The recipe below sounds like a great, refreshing moisturizer for summer. I would add some cocoa butter or shea butter to give the mixture more stability. Also, refrigerate for extra cooling and to keep the coconut oil from melting!
