I am both these women

This photo has been circulating the internet, and I can’t help but feel it resonates because so many of us chicken keepers share a similar story. A life that looked very different before the addition of chickens.

Life before chickens may have been cleaner, and maybe even easier, but I think many would agree that life WITH chickens is better.

Before chickens, before the growth of my social media platforms, and even before our move to Arkansas, I was a cosmetologist for over a decade. I helped run one of the top salons in Palm Springs, California. From news anchors to Coachella celebrities, our salon catered to some of the most influential socialites in the area.

That chapter taught me patience, professionalism, and pride in my work.

Shortly after I conceived our first child, Avery, my husband received a job transfer to Arkansas. It was a massive leap of faith, but with a child finally on the way, after years of struggle, I knew we needed a change. I wanted to give her the kind of childhood I recognized and valued.

Growing up in the high desert of California, I was raised around horses and livestock. I learned responsibility early, caring for animals that depended on my discipline and consistency. I watched effort turn into growth, and that foundation shaped who I became as an adult.

I wanted that for my children. I wanted freedom from the social pressures of California, space to roam, land to explore, and a childhood built on imagination, responsibility, and connection to living things.

Once we made the move to Arkansas, which truly is a hidden gem, I got my hands on some chickens (some of my very first being Ayam Cemani). Before I knew it, I was posting photos daily, excited about this new chapter. Naturally, not everyone on my friends list from my old life shared that enthusiasm.

“Whitney’s lost it.”
“She’s out there shoveling chicken sh*t in Arkansas.”

And honestly? They weren’t wrong.

Who changes their entire life on a whim like that?

That’s when I decided to create this page. I figured anyone interested in my chicken adventure could follow along here. What I didn’t anticipate was how much this platform would grow, or how deeply it would connect me to others on similar paths - resulting in friendships and community I know will last a lifetime.

While my life and career in California taught me many valuable lessons that I still apply today, chickens have taught me even more. They’ve given my children a childhood I know they’ll look back on fondly, contributing to their growth and confidence as adults.

Yes, life is messier now. There are fewer reasons to get all dolled up, and designer clothes have been replaced with flannel, sweats, and a pocket full of eggs. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The experiences I am able to share and provide for my family are far more valuable and foundational than the path and life I personally was living before, and I am truly grateful for the journey and opportunities the Lord has laid out for myself and family.
I know without a doubt, we are exactly where we are meant to be, chicken sh*t and all.

I’d love to hear your experience - what does your chicken origin story look like?
