How far back does the Finnish sauna really go?

One of the earliest ancestors of today’s sauna may have been the kuoppasauna (“pit sauna”)—a shallow pit dug into the ground, lined with stones that were heated by fire to create warmth.

Based on current archaeological evidence, similar structures in Finland may date as far back as 7000–5000 BCE. These early pit saunas were likely multifunctional spaces used for warmth, drying, shelter, and, eventually, bathing.

Imagine it: thousands of years before the familiar log sauna, people were already gathering around heated stones.

That said, sauna history isn’t always straightforward. Archaeologists continue to debate exactly how these ancient structures were used and whether all of them should be considered true “saunas” in the modern sense.
