One comment on my last post said:
“If it took me 2.5 hours to do detailed nail art, I’d charge over $200.”
And honestly…
I agree.
My post was never about saying detailed nail art should only cost $75.
It was about showing what happens when talented nail techs undercharge.
Too many artists are creating incredible work while charging prices that don’t account for their time, supplies, taxes, overhead, or experience. Then they wonder why they’re booked but still struggling financially.
Being fully booked doesn’t automatically mean you’re profitable.
If your work takes 2.5+ hours, your pricing should reflect:
✨ Your skill
✨ Your experience
✨ Your artistry
✨ The sustainability of your business
The goal isn’t to rush through appointments.
The goal is to build a business where you can create amazing art and make a living doing it.
So let’s talk about it…
👇 How do you price your nail services?
• By time?
• By design?
• By experience?
• A combination of everything?
I’d love to hear how other nail techs approach pricing.

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get discussed enough in the beauty industry.
How much does a nail tech actually have to work to earn a modest living?
I often see people question service prices, but very rarely do we talk about the reality behind them.
Let’s use a common example: a $75 nail set.
Many people see that number and assume the nail tech is making $75 every time they sit down with a client.
They’re not.
After products, rent, taxes, software, processing fees, licensing, education, and other business expenses, a nail tech keeps only a portion of what they bring in.
To actually take home around $50,000 a year, many nail techs need to generate close to $91,000 in annual sales.
At $75 per service, that’s over 1,200 appointments a year.
More than 23 clients every week.
Roughly 5 clients per day.
Week after week.
Month after month.
And that’s not to become wealthy.
That’s to pay rent or a mortgage.
Buy groceries.
Cover utilities.
Put gas in the car.
Take care of a family.
Save for emergencies.
And hopefully enjoy a life outside of work.
This post isn’t about convincing anyone to spend money they don’t have.
It’s about understanding that skilled professionals deserve the opportunity to earn a living wage from the work they do.
The question isn’t whether a nail service costs too much.
The question is:
How much should a licensed professional have to work just to afford an average life in today’s economy?

I see a lot of comments online when nail techs share their prices.
“$75 for nails?!”
But have you ever stopped to think about what that $75 actually covers?
Let’s say a nail tech charges $75 for a set that takes 2–2.5 hours.
Most people assume the tech puts $75 directly into their pocket.
The reality is very different.
Before that nail tech gets paid, they have to cover products, files, bits, gloves, disinfectants, booth rent, credit card processing fees, booking software, continuing education, licensing fees, insurance, taxes, and countless other business expenses.
Then there’s the time you don’t see.
Answering messages.
Scheduling appointments.
Creating content.
Cleaning.
Sanitizing.
Shopping for supplies.
Taking classes to improve their skills.
Many independent nail techs charging $75 for a 2–2.5 hour service are earning far less per hour than people realize after expenses are deducted.
This isn’t about convincing anyone to spend more than they’re comfortable spending.
It’s about helping people understand that service pricing is not the same thing as take-home pay.
When you sit in a nail tech’s chair, you’re not just paying for the 2 hours you spend there. You’re paying for years of experience, professional products, continuing education, sanitation, licensing, and the business behind the service.
The next time you see a nail price online and think, “That’s expensive,” ask yourself:
Compared to what?
Because skilled labor, creativity, education, and professionalism all have value.
And every small business owner deserves the opportunity to build a sustainable career doing what they love.
