I haven’t been here much. But, I am here if you need me.
Pretty much since December of 2020, I have been touring around the country with Billy Strings. I am so incredibly blessed to be able to be able to do this. I worked hard.
At age 18, I declared myself a professional in the equestrian business. I was taking care of my father (stroke patient) and started a horse boarding business on his 5 acres. Later spreading it to both adjacent neighbors, totaling 11 acres, 3 barns, and 19 horses. I attended University of Maryland and rode on the equestrian team, while busting my @$$ towards a sociology degree. I was a terrible student, and I knew horses were my thing. I just needed to finish something I started!!
In 2000, I invested in a 40 acre property and with a very large loan, built an amazing equestrian facility. I worked physical labor with 20-30 horses everyday for 25 years. We traveled 2-3 weekends a month, and I taught lessons on evenings and weekends we weren’t showing. It was pretty hard on family life. I was on the road a lot. I lost my ass in a divorce in 2002. I mention this because sadly, it happens to so many and it’s a financial hardship for most. Then, I was a single mom. But, the tough times made me fight harder!!
In 2014 I said goodbye to a place I lived my whole life, my family, a full barn of horses and students, and heading to Georgia. I tried to recreate the business but it wasn’t the same. My heart wasn’t in it. I thought I made a terrible decision.
I found my people in Georgia through music, volleyball and horses. I made a home and a life for my girls and got them through high school while trying to run a business I was half in to.
But, happy ending… I am enjoying the benefits of my hard work and smart property investments. I put a lot of my own enjoyment on hold, but it was all worth it 100%!!! It never makes me sad to say I put things on hold for my girls or my business. I loved doing their things with them and I’m sad it’s over. It sure does make me happy to look back and see that I set myself up to be able to do the things I love.
But, the best thing that I did for myself was to make my life more simple. I still work but now I’m the music industry. I should have done this all along, but the horse business was rewarding for many reasons too.
I’ve been asked recently how I am able to do so much… if your frustrated that your not doing all you want right now, work hard now so you can play harder later. Make every investment you can, INCLUDING your own health and happiness. See the show, go on the vacation. The time will come where you can look back and say you are proud that you worked for it. Don’t look back.
