Health care in the United States is increasingly team-based, and doulas—who often provide emotional, physical, and educational support for patients during birth, the postpartum period, and beyond—are valuable members of many care teams.

ACOG’s new clinical guidance encourages ob-gyn collaboration with doulas and gives ob-gyns the tools they need to better understand a doula’s role. It also highlights the importance of stronger partnerships between clinicians and doulas, which can provide vital support across the lifespan—including during and after pregnancy—and can lead to better patient outcomes.

Every year I recertify as a doula, to confirm I am still practicing, and have the necessary skills to support laboring parents. I know what I’m doing! 😉

Did you have a C-section birth? If so, what were the circumstances of it?

Cesarean section, aka C-section, is a major surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incisions made in the mothers abdomen and uterus, usually a horizontal cut low on the abdomen. It’s most often performed when a vaginal delivery is not possible or safe.

In Alaska in 2024 (the most recent data), 23.2% of live births were cesarean deliveries.

The rate of primary (it being someone’s first) cesarean deliveries was 16.4 per 100 live births.

The rate of VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) was 27.8 per 100 live births.

Between 2014-2024, the percent of live births delivered by Cesarean declined more than 2%!
