Your hair doesn’t suddenly “turn grey.” 👀

What we call grey hair usually happens when a follicle begins producing less melanin as new hair grows. The strand that has already emerged is made of keratin and cannot simply switch from dark to grey overnight.

As pigment production decreases:
• Some hairs continue growing with pigment
• Others grow in with very little or no pigment
• Dark and white strands together create the appearance of “grey” hair

Genetics plays a major role in when this happens, but oxidative stress, certain nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems, and other health factors may also be associated with premature greying.

And plucking that white hair? It won’t make the next one grow back dark. The follicle determines the pigment of the new strand.
