In the morning , sitting, every moment is led by my watching of my breathing. Then in movement, my breath leads me- In and out, pausing, slow inhales, full exhales, switch, full inhales, slow exhales, short, fast, slow, pauses, whatever the breath chooses, I listen.

Being curious - what is this moment inviting me to notice

We don’t get to choose every thought that enters our mind. We do get to choose which thoughts become our future by letting our lightest and fearless thoughts settle into our hearts. We do this by consciously recognizing those curated thoughts and opening our heart space as we breathe in. Let it bloom there. Sigh. Doesn’t it feel good?

Every breath is an awakening of the soul if I choose to connect to soulfulness. My soul and my breath are intimate and unique… no one else can experience this breath moment in the way I am experiencing it. Fusing my soul to my breath I can explore a sweetness that is deeply personal, connected and whole.

In a session with a 10-year-old boy whose life had been shaken by cyberbullying…time had passed since the event, but his body didn’t know he was safe.

“My heart still beats loud and really fast,” he told me. “I can feel it.”

His wise mother brought him in so we could...breathe together.

I placed my hands gently on his shoulders and chest and invited him to let them become heavy and quiet.

“Let’s see if we can let your breath move somewhere different.”

I asked him to breathe gently through his nose and notice his belly.

“Breathe in...let your belly soften and get bigger .
Breathe out...and let your belly fall and get smaller.”

When his shoulders wanted to lift:

“Your trusty guard dog lives up here in your upper chest. When you breathe, and lift your shoulders high, your heart beats loud and fast and guard dog wakes up ..
But when your breath fills your belly, your guard dog rests because he knows you’re safe. He curls up, closes his eyes...”

Immediately he understood.

With 5 breaths, his heartbeat slowed.

His eyes became heavy.

He yawned.

His whole body softened.

He wanted to sleep.

Children intuitively understand what many adults have forgotten:

Our breath is constantly speaking to our nervous system.

Even after danger has passed, we can continue breathing in ways that tell our body we’re still under threat. The heart races. Adrenaline rises. Muscles stay guarded. We live as though the emergency is still happening.

The beautiful news is that we can interrupt that pattern.

One gentle breath at a time.

This young boy—and his wise mother—recognized something profound: the sooner we remind the body what safety feels like, the less likely fear becomes a lifelong habit.

Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as this:

Breathe in...the belly rises.

Breathe out...the belly falls. The body remembers.

And eventually, it believes you.

It sounds less like learning than remembering. This voice is home. Finding ways to turn up the volume and become attuned to this voice is the way out of darkness and confusion and meaninglessness. by Hilma af Klimt

When I remember to center myself and anchor myself in breath and love, I no longer feel the pain and confusion and chaos of everything outside of me. Practice finding your center when you are safe and comfortable, from there you can hold your center with greater balance when you enter the fray.

Pain- many people with long-standing pain discover that beneath the exhaustion and coping there is grief. Grief for lost year’s, lost energy, lost possibilities, and the burden of carrying so much alone. Feeling that sadness can be painful, but it can also be an important part of reconnecting with oneself. Taking an active role in your healing does not mean your illness is your fault. It means you are discovering that you have influence, choice and participation in the healing process even while acknowledging the reality of your condition. Taking responsibility for your pain can be done without taking blame for it.

Every conscious breath stimulates the heart. On a physiological level- paced breathing improves heart rate variability (HRV), while emotionally and spiritually it activates the vast energy and intelligence of the heart. Conscious controlled breathing is a tool both simple and profound. Ancient practices of breathing were used as medicine, mystic journeying, initiation, and community. There is so much to discover about breath practices to improve every aspect of your life.
