We talk a lot about how the struggles of marginalized groups are interconnected. But, we don’t talk enough about how our joy is also. As begin Pride Month and APAHM, we believe you can’t contain Asian joy or the Black experience or Pride in just the span of one month. So come celebrate with us on Sunday and then every day of the year not just when the calendar tells you to.

A recent Leading Asian Americans to Unite for Change poll estimated that 22 MM people in this country identified themselves as of Asian descent and another 1.5 MM identified as Pacific Islander. According to LAAUNCH, “Within these regional groups, a huge variety of ethnicities exist within the Asian American community. People who identify their heritage as Chinese, Indian or Filipino make up the largest share.” In addition to the 4 largest communities, there are an additional 16 additional communities mentioned in the report. This tells you that the AAPI community is not a monolith but also there are millions of AAPI stories to be told. So, please come to get to know us because we’d love to find space to tell our stories.

If you were a Filipino, you would informally refer to each other as pinoy or pinay. More formally, you would say kababayan. For your family, you would say pamilya. For your chosen tribe, you would call them barkada. Barkada isn’t just a word for your friends. The word means so much more and is better understood with another phrase used by Filipinos when they talk about solidarity, as pointed out by Regina Aquino at the National Day of Solidarity Against AAPI Hate DC Flagship Rally rally, Isang Bagsak! This means “if one of us falls, we all fall”.

We are only 4 DAYS away from the Barkada Barbecue and the last Night Market Pop Up at Whitehall Mill. Not only are The Heritage Kitchen and Atchara Family going to blow it out with some Filipino BBQ goodness, but now Suspended Brewing Company will be serving up some beverage deliciousness. So, fam, the night market pop up starts at noon (when you still can get your favorite foods from Heritage and the rest of Whitehall Market) and then the Barkada Barbecue kicks off at 2 pm. Don’t forget to sign up on our Eventbrite (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/barkada-barbecue-and-night-market-redux-tickets-157419743691) so we know how many people to expect. Also, bring your own tsinelas.

It doesn’t feel like we’ve talked about the effects on individuals of over a year of COVID quarantine. What a better way to bridge that conversation than through art. (of ) this past Saturday sketched pandemic portraits of people in masked and then asked them what they think should be underneath. It was whimsical, beautiful and most of all an impactful way of translating our collective joy and trauma at the same time. Nguyen may be bringing this back on Sunday at . Don’t miss out!

In addition to Nguyen, there will be a host of other artists along with x Barkada Barbecue which will also be fueled by ! The Pop Up Market will be starting at noon and barbecue will start at 2 pm. Please make sure you sign up on our (link in our bio) so we can get a gauge of how many people are coming! Hope to see you all soon!
