everyone deserves to feel comfortable and confident in the chair of any hair care professional, no matter their hair type, texture, or skin color. we have already gotten the crown act signed into Maryland state law, which prohibits discrimination based upon hair texture and protective styles like braids or locs, now let’s take it further!

Marylanders, I’m calling on YOU to help me dismantle white supremacist systems in our state by changing the Maryland Board of Cosmetology’s licensing requirements to include Textured Hair Education in school and apprenticeship program curriculums for Cosmetologists/Barbers/Limited Stylists. please help me make a change for the better in our state by sharing this post, the link to the petition, and also by signing the petition.

if i’m being 100% honest it’s hard to show up online for my business in the way that i would like because it feels a little crazy telling y’all to come take care of your beauty needs while our landscape rapidly changes around us. this is where i have to nudge myself and remind myself that i am intentionally creating a space that isn’t just a salon but a sanctuary, and a space for community and healing.

i come from a lineage of beauticians, salon owners, root workers, black panthers, and freed slaves who all did the necessary hard work before me and i’ll be damned if i don’t continue that work for my son and future descendants!

we r fresh off the heels of a new moon (eclipse!!) in virgo, and it’s so fitting getting this card!!

ace’s signify new beginnings and opportunities, and pentacles signify the physical including health, finances, career, and home. this is a great time to sit down and look at the details of your life: your routines, goals, habits, finances, hobbies etc. so that you can begin to plant the seeds for the next chapter we are all collectively about to enter.

we are smack dab in the middle of eclipse szn with a Solar Eclipse in Virgo on the 21st! this eclipse is going to shake your habits and routines up and (hopefully) highlight the areas that are draining you rather than filling you up. make sure to look at your birth chart to see what house and themes this eclipse is highlighting for you specifically!

usually when i see the ten of swords i think “oh no” because of how tired, hopeless, and bogged down the energy of the card is. but, this time it is reversed! which signifies that although we have come to an end of a hard ass long ass journey, there is still hope for what is yet to come. the new moon in virgo will be a great time to reflect upon your habits & routines and decide what needs to be let go so that you no longer burn yourself out.

let’s talk about protein, babes!

the hair strand is made up of multiple things: proteins (like keratin), lipids, water, and minerals. all of these things combine into a rope like structure and are held together by different types of bonds: hydrogen (weakest and most abundant), Ionic (salt bonds, responsible for 1/3 of hair strength), and disulfide (strong permanent bonds that provide structure). when these bonds are weakened or ultimately broken it is important to nourish the hair to encourage bond repair.

when hair gets damaged, the polypeptide chains (keratin chains) that make up the inner structure of hair strands break. these chains are responsible for hair strength and elasticity; protein is the building block of the hair!

protein treatments work by penetrating into the deepest layers of the hair and filling in the gaps between the broken bonds. not all protein treatments are made the same! there are some that fill in the gaps horizontally, only replenishing the more permanent disulfide bonds. there are others that fill in the gap vertically, restoring the keratin chains that contribute to elasticity and strength in the hair. and, of course, there are treatments that do both.

protein ingredients like hydrolyzed wheat protein or silk amino acids attach directly to the hair follicle and harden the cuticle layer. this places a barrier around the follicle, which protects it from further damage. another ingredient, k18 polypeptide, travels into the inner-most layers of hair to reach the core polypeptide chains (keratin chains) at just the right size and molecular structure to fit in and reconnect broken keratin chains and reconform any broken disulfide bonds. even though keratin naturally exists in your hair, these treatments can be a major lifesaver during those times when your hair craves some extra nourishment.
