Please allow me a moment of your time…. 1 in 3 women are victims of domestic violence. 1 in 5 men are victims of domestic violence. 1 in 7 children between the ages of 11-19 are victims of domestic violence. And those are the numbers that are actually reported. It is estimated that only 20% of domestic violence cases are reported. Also, understand that under the umbrella of domestic violence, there are three tiers: community violence, intimate partner violence, and domestic violence, as in familial. Last night, Nile Style Barbershop partnered with The One Love Foundation to address the topics of healthy vs. unhealthy relationships and domestic violence with a group of young men. Emotional regulation, proper and effective communication, and self-awareness were some of the topics discussed. Also, the expectations of men in this current society vs. “traditional” values, the socialization of silence, were discussed. It is not instinctive but a learned prison that this world teaches them to live in. It becomes an expectation that suppresses emotion and expression. It begins early, as children. They are socialized to remain silent, conditioned to suppress vulnerability, and rewarded for emotional restraint. Phrases like “Boys don’t cry”, “I’ll give you something to cry about”, “Toughen up”, and “Handle it yourself” are often told to boys when in emotional distress. They are forced to bury their feelings before they even understand them. Silence is translated as strength. Only anger gets a pass, because anger looks like control, not vulnerability. Why is this important? Because suppressed emotions can become dangerous. Emotional illiteracy is the reality for many children. As they pass through adolescence and into adulthood, they become shells of a man. They were never taught an emotional vocabulary, healthy self-soothing tactics, healthy relationship communication, conflict resolution, and vulnerability-based connections with others. So when they are faced with overwhelming emotions, they have no tools. They default to withdrawal, shutting down, anger, and most dangerously, violence. The workshop addressed all these topics and much more. Our young men need to feel safe expressing themselves emotionally. They need to be supported and encouraged. They need to be embraced, not just by their families but also by their communities. We provided a healthy forum for those young men to express themselves, ask questions, and most importantly, be acknowledged and heard. The bridges between these young men, as well as men in general, need to be consistently built and rebuilt. It’s a responsibility that we as men must be held accountable for. We all have mothers, some sisters, some daughters. Hence, it is paramount that we actively mentor these young men into manhood with the skills necessary for self-awareness and emotional transparency. I could keep going, but I think you get the point….
