I want to clear up something that shames a lot of women for no reason, because it is simply not true. Dark underarms are not a sign that you are dirty. In fact, it is often the opposite.
Let me explain what I actually see. Most people do not get ingrown hairs or heavy discoloration under the armpits. But many Black women do get this darkening, and here is the irony. Black women, in my long experience, are some of the cleanest women I have ever met. Because they are so clean and never want to smell, they reach for antiperspirant deodorants and use them faithfully.
And that is exactly where the darkening comes from. It is not sweat, it is not lack of washing, it is not poor hygiene. There is an ingredient in the antiperspirant deodorant itself that reacts with the skin and causes that discoloration under the arms. So the very product being used to stay fresh and clean is what is leaving the dark shadow behind.
So please, if you have been hiding your arms and blaming yourself, stop. This is a pigment reaction to a product, not a reflection of you. And discoloration like this can be treated properly and safely on melanin-rich skin.
