There is a lot of noise about cortisol right now, and most of it is wrong.

"Cortisol face" detoxes, and cortisol "cocktails" have turned one hormone into the internet's villain. But cortisol is essential, it wakes you in the morning, manages your stress response, helps regulate inflammation. The problem is not cortisol itself. It is chronic, unrelenting activation of a system designed to switch on briefly and off again.

Sustained stress disrupts sleep, drives cravings, and raises blood sugar. What helps is not a supplement but the unglamorous fundamentals: sleep, breathwork, movement, boundaries, and addressing the root stressor.

There is a backlash building against health over-optimization, and it is overdue.

The last few years turned wellness into a full-time job: wearables on every limb, a shelf of supplements, every night's sleep reduced to a score. For most people it produces anxiety, not health. More data is not the same as more health.

Our position is simple. Measure what genuinely changes the plan, act on it, and ignore the noise. The goal was never a perfect dashboard. It was a longer, healthier life you actually enjoy living.

Did you know GLP-1s are already created naturally in your gut?

We asked Heather, our in-house Clinical Nutritionist, to break down the interplay between GLP-1s and the gut and why gut health matters when looking at metabolic health as a whole.

From digestion and appetite regulation to the gut microbiome, what’s happening in the gut can play an important role in how the body responds.

The takeaway: GLP-1s are only one part of the picture. Supporting your gut, nutrition, and overall health matters too.

Claude Community Event Recap✨

An evening exploring the intersection of AI, medicine, and human connection. We welcomed the Claude Community to Sydenham Clinic Beverly Hills for an intimate conversation about the future of healthcare.

Physicians, health leaders, and innovators came together to explore a new triangle of care: Physician + Patient + AI. The conversation focused not on AI replacing doctors, but on using it to give physicians more time for connection, prevention, and the deeply human parts of medicine.

Thank you to Claude by Anthropic Community Ambassador Travis Johnson, founder of Aura Path, and everyone who joined us in making the evening so meaningful.

At Sydenham, we believe the future of medicine should be both more advanced and more human.

Join us for our next event by signing up for our newsletter.

"This isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be."

That's what Dr. Heather Richardson says the great majority of her mastectomy patients tell her afterward. Many say the same thing: "I don't look like I've had a mastectomy, I look like I've had some work done."

The reason is the modern gold standard she practices: direct-to-implant reconstruction. One single surgery. The ni**le stays. A small incision hidden at the bra line, so looking in the mirror, there's no visible scar on the breast at all.

It's not yet common everywhere. But it's becoming more common, and she wants every woman to know it's possible.

Is berberine worth the hype?

One of the few trending supplements where the research is genuinely interesting. It can help control blood sugar and insulin resistance, support weight loss, protect the liver, and lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and some studies have compared it favorably to metformin.

It's underutilized, with few side effects. But "few side effects" isn't "none," and the right supplement depends entirely on you. Talk to your physician first.

You already make your own GLP-1. Here's how to support it, no prescription needed.

GLP-1 is the hormone that tells your brain you're full. It travels from your gut to your brain largely along the vagus nerve, so supporting that nerve helps the message land. Three ways to do it:

- Eat calm, not rushed. Eating between meetings or on the way to soccer practice keeps you stressed. A relaxed state keeps your body parasympathetic, which supports the vagus nerve.
- Breathe with your belly, not your shoulders. Diaphragmatic breathing directly stimulates the vagus nerve.
- Slow down and actually enjoy your food. The gut-to-brain signal fires far more often than the other direction, give it the conditions to work.

Small shifts. Real signal.

This or That: NeuroKids Edition 🧬

Dr. Amy Leake (Amy James Leake) puts pediatric care to the test, and the answers reframe how we think about kids' health:

Genomic analysis or standard workup? Depends, but genomics gives you the root-cause roadmap, not just what's happening in the blood today.
Cheek swab or blood draw? The non-invasive swab, every time. Kids tolerate it beautifully. Nobody likes being stuck.
Precision genetic mapping or trial-and-error ADHD meds? Precision, without question. Trial-and-error is costly, slow, and often leaves a child "a little better" but never optimized.

As Dr. Leake puts it: the days are long, but the years are short. We get one life, so let's customize care to the child, not the average.

Caught our Medical Director asleep at his desk. 😅

In his defense, doctors are chronically sleep-deprived, and Dr. Brittain (adambrittainmd) is the first to admit it. "Do as I say, not as I do."

Here's what he wants you to aim for: 1.5 hours of non-REM deep sleep a night. That's the restorative stage, when your body clears damaged cells, brings in fresh tissue, and repairs the brain. Skip it, and you wake up in a fog.

Everyone talks about REM. But REM is when you're dreaming, not when you're restoring. Deep sleep is the one that counts.

Every member gets an Oura Ring to measure exactly this. Because what gets measured, gets better.
