SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the number beside it, indicates how well it protects skin against sunburns. It shows how much longer it would take untanned skin to start to redden with sunscreen applied compared to how long it takes to start reddening without it.

Fall has always been my favorite time of year, here are a few things that are on my bucket list this month. What’s on yours?

☀️What is the UV threat?☀️

UV radiation is a form of energy that comes from the sun and is split into 3 types - UVA, UVB and UVC

UVC rays are harmless. UVC Rays have the shortest wavelength and do not reach us on earth

🔴 UVA Radiation makes up 95% of all UV rays that make it to the earths surface
🔴 UVA damages collagen and elastin (they provide strength, structure and elasticity) in the skin and generate free radicals
🔴 UVA rays are the longest wavelength that cause changes deeper in the skin layers, like wrinkles and aging

🔵 UVB rays cause changes to the skins surface such as tanning and sunburns
🔵 UVB rays can burn the skin at any time, but there is a higher chance for those that live closer to the equator, at higher altitudes, or when the rays reflect on surfaces such as water, sand or pavement
🔵 A sunburn is the skins reaction to too much light exposure

Both UVA and UVB exposure can cause damage to the skin and therfore contribute to a higher risk of developing skin cancer
